Self custody in crypto has always relied on blind trust. Most hardware wallets use sealed secure elements that users cannot inspect. There is no way to verify whether the chips contain hidden vulnerabilities or backdoors, even though they protect billions of dollars in digital assets. Trust has been the default, not proof.

Trezor Safe 7 aims to change that foundation. As the first hardware wallet with an auditable secure element, its security architecture and firmware are open to independent verification. The secure element is no longer a black box. It becomes a layer of protection that anyone can validate. This shift marks the beginning of a new era of verifiable security in crypto custody.

In October 2025, Trezor introduced the Safe 7 — its most advanced hardware wallet yet, It is the first in the world to feature a fully auditable secure element and it stands as a decisive statement about where self custody is headed. CoinRank sat down with Matej Zak, CEO of Trezor, to discuss the motivations behind this release, what it changes for users, and why transparency should become the new industry standard.

Great to have you with us Matej especially at such an exciting moment for self custody. let’s start with the big picture: why was now the right time to launch the Trezor Safe 7? How does this release fit into the broader trends we are seeing in crypto right now?

This moment in crypto is defined by a growing tension between convenience and real ownership. As more users turn to exchanges, custodians, or ETFs, the core idea of holding your own keys is at risk of being diluted. Trezor Safe 7 is our response — a tool that puts full control back into users’ hands. It’s fully wireless, radically transparent, and designed for the long term. With this release, we’re making it easier than ever to secure your assets independently — without intermediaries, and without compromise.

What makes Safe 7 different from other hardware wallets currently on the market?

Trezor Safe 7 redefines what a hardware wallet can be. It’s the world’s first to feature a transparent, auditable secure element — not a black box, but a chip anyone can verify. We’ve also built in dual secure elements for layered protection, and designed the device to be quantum-ready, ensuring security long into the future. Most wallets force users to choose between security, usability, and openness. Trezor Safe 7 delivers all three — in a fully wireless, premium device that integrates seamlessly with the broader crypto ecosystem.

What should Trezor users take away from this launch? How does it impact their day-to-day experience?

For our users, Trezor Safe 7 is about confidence and control. It builds on everything we’ve learned over the past decade — combining open-source transparency with new levels of physical and digital security. Whether you’re securing savings, staking assets, or trading on the go, this device gives you a seamless, wireless experience without compromising on trust. It’s a future-proof solution for anyone serious about self-custody.

Trezor has long focused on open-source principles and transparency. How do those ideas translate into real-world security for this device?

Trezor Safe 7 is a direct expression of our mission — to empower individuals to self-custody their bitcoin and crypto with tools that seamlessly balance security, privacy, and usability. With a transparent and auditable secure element, open-source design, and a fully wireless experience, we’ve built a wallet that puts users in full control without requiring them to compromise. It’s about making the safest option also the most accessible and intuitive — so more people can hold their own keys with confidence.

There’s a growing shift toward self-custody globally. Do you see the Safe 7 as accelerating that movement — or is it still aimed at crypto-native users?

Self-custody is evolving — from a technical challenge to an essential part of responsible crypto ownership. As users become more aware of the risks tied to custodial platforms, they’re looking for tools that offer true independence without sacrificing usability. Trezor Safe 7 meets that demand by combining open-source transparency, advanced physical security, and wireless access in one device. It’s built to make real ownership practical — not just possible

Self-custody has often been seen as too technical or intimidating for the average user. Do you think that’s starting to change — and how does Safe 7 make it more practical in real life?

Trezor helped define the concept of self-custody more than a decade ago — and our role today is to keep raising the bar. For us, it’s not about asking users to trust. It’s about giving them the ability to verify. With fully open-source code and the world’s first auditable secure element, Trezor Safe 7 offers a level of transparency no other wallet does. That’s how we believe the future of custody should work — not behind closed systems, but in the open, where anyone can see exactly how their security is built.

Do you think this kind of transparency — down to the hardware level — can help rebuild trust in the crypto space more broadly?

Innovation only builds trust if it challenges the right things. With Trezor Safe 7, we’re challenging the idea that hardware security has to be a black box. Once users see that verifiable security is possible — and actually works — it becomes harder for the industry to justify closed systems. We’re not just adding features; we’re redefining what users should expect. Our hope is that this raises the baseline — that more companies start treating transparency as a requirement, not an option.

Conclusion

As the crypto industry matures one principle has never been clearer. Real ownership demands real transparency. With Safe 7 Trezor is not simply introducing another hardware wallet it is pushing the entire market forward. By making security verifiable rather than assumed it challenges every closed system that asks users to trust blindly.

True self custody is not about convenience or complexity. It is about empowerment. It is about knowing not guessing that your assets are protected.

If crypto is built on cryptographic truth then the tools that guard our wealth must follow the same rule. “Verify Don’t Trust”. With Safe 7 that future is no longer a vision. It is already in users’ hands.
