In a major step forward for crypto banking in the U.S., the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has granted preliminary banking charter approval to Erebor, a crypto-focused financial institution. Erebor is backed by billionaire tech entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel, known for co-founding PayPal and early investments in Facebook.

This preliminary approval doesn’t mean Erebor is ready to launch immediately, but it allows the company to move forward in its journey toward becoming a fully licensed bank. The OCC’s decision reflects a gradual, cautious shift in Washington toward recognizing crypto’s potential role in the future of finance.

Erebor aims to be a crypto-native bank, offering services like crypto custody, digital asset lending, and stablecoin operations, all under a federally regulated banking charter. Backing from Peter Thiel gives Erebor both credibility and deep-pocketed support.
The approval is considered “preliminary” because Erebor must still meet additional regulatory requirements before it can operate as a full-fledged bank. However, this early green light signals growing openness among U.S. regulators toward crypto-native financial models, especially those aiming for compliance from day one.

While regulators have cracked down on some sectors of the crypto industry, the OCC’s move suggests that crypto institutions willing to work within the rules may have a path forward. Erebor could become a model for other crypto firms looking to gain legitimacy in the U.S. financial system.
If Erebor clears the next regulatory steps, it could offer a compliant, secure platform for crypto banking, appealing to both retail and institutional investors.
