Bubble

Wall Street’s enthusiasm for AI is starting to cool. After months of record highs and massive investment flows, some analysts warn that the excitement may have gone too far. Valuations across the AI sector are soaring, and investors seem to be chasing growth at any price. Many experts now fear that expectations for AI’s profitability could be unrealistic. While few deny the technology’s long-term promise, the short-term frenzy has created a sense of unease. Some market veterans believe this pattern looks alarmingly similar to past speculative bubbles that ended in sharp corrections.

ASML reported a solid third quarter, supported by booming demand for advanced chips used in AI applications. Revenue and profit figures came in stronger than expected, thanks to a surge in orders from leading semiconductor manufacturers. However, the company also issued a cautious outlook for the coming year. Executives warned that orders from China—one of ASML’s largest markets—may decline sharply in 2026. The slowdown is not due to stockpiling but rather to weaker local demand and ongoing export restrictions. This potential drop poses a major challenge, as China has recently accounted for a significant share of ASML’s growth.

The global rush into AI investments shows no sign of slowing down. Tech giants and startups alike are spending heavily on AI infrastructure, chips, and software. But many analysts are concerned that the valuations of AI-related companies have risen faster than their earnings. Some compare the current environment to the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s, where innovation was real but profits took years to materialize. The difference this time is that much of the AI spending is funded by cash-rich firms, not by heavy borrowing. Even so, if growth expectations fade or profits disappoint, a sharp correction could follow. For now, the market remains in a delicate balance between optimism and risk.

China’s Role in the AI Supply Chain

China remains a key player in the AI supply chain, both as a consumer and as a producer. Its chipmakers and tech firms rely heavily on advanced tools from global suppliers like ASML. However, trade restrictions and shifting geopolitical tensions are beginning to reshape these relationships. A significant drop in Chinese orders would not only hurt ASML but could ripple across the global AI ecosystem. Reduced Chinese spending on semiconductor equipment might also slow the overall pace of AI innovation and manufacturing. As companies diversify supply chains away from China, the market faces new uncertainty about cost, scale, and technological leadership.

The AI revolution continues to inspire investors, policymakers, and businesses around the world. Yet the growing debate over whether this is a sustainable boom or an emerging bubble has intensified. On one side, optimists argue that AI will boost productivity and redefine industries. On the other, skeptics warn that too much capital is chasing too few real profits. ASML’s situation captures the broader tension: robust growth powered by AI demand, yet vulnerable to global shifts and policy risks. Whether this momentum leads to a lasting transformation or an abrupt reversal will depend on how well companies and investors manage the balance between innovation and speculation.
