Restaking has become the buzzword of 2025 in the world of Ethereum and DeFi. What seemed like an experiment for advanced validators just a year ago has now turned into an entire economy with billions of dollars in total value locked, liquid tokens, and institutional integrations - according to official EigenLayer metrics.
If liquid staking (LST) was once a breakthrough, restaking is the next level.
What Is Restaking?
Restaking is an EigenLayer mechanism whereby natively staked ETH is re-delegated to secure Autonomous Verifiable Services (AVSs), with the possibility of rewards and risks (including slashing) under the terms of the selected AVS.
The idea was proposed by the EigenLayer protocol, which opened up the possibility for ETH to perform several functions at once:
<ul>
 <li>receive rewards for participating in the Ethereum consensus;</li>
 <li>simultaneously ensure the security of third-party applications;</li>
 <li>generate additional income without new investments while adding risks under the terms of the AVS.</li>
</ul>
In essence, restaking transforms ETH from a disposable asset into a multi-purpose tool for income and security.
Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRT): Next-Generation Liquidity
To make restaking accessible to ordinary users, Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs) have been introduced as tokens representing a share in restaked ETH.
Projects such as Ether.fi (eETH), Puffer Finance (pufETH), and Renzo (ezETH) allow you to:
<ul>
 <li>deposit ETH or liquid tokens such as stETH;</li>
 <li>automatically restake them through EigenLayer;</li>
 <li>receive a liquid token (LRT) that can be used in DeFi.</li>
</ul>
LRTs combine staking income, AVS rewards, and liquidity, opening up the possibility of participating in multiple income streams simultaneously. It’s important to distinguish between LST and LRT: while LST (Liquid Staking Tokens) reflect liquid ETH staking positions at the Ethereum L1 level, LRT (Liquid Restaking Tokens) represent the liquid restaking position of those assets across AVSs via EigenLayer.
Why Has Restaking Become a Trend?
Restaking became not just a DeFi innovation, but a new class of financial instruments. Here's why:
<ol>
 <li>Increased capital efficiency. Restaking allows you to “make the same ETH work twice”: you earn from staking and receive additional rewards for providing AVS.</li>
 <li>Development of shared security. Small protocols such as oracles (data feeds connecting smart contracts with real-world information), data availability layers (networks that store and provide blockchain data for rollups), and zk-services (zero-knowledge systems verifying transactions privately and efficiently) can now rent Ethereum's security instead of building their own validator network. This accelerates innovation and lowers the barrier to entry.</li>
 <li>Institutionalization of DeFi. In 2025, major players joined the restaking movement. For example, Anchorage Digital, a federally chartered digital asset bank in the United States, offered corporate investors the opportunity to restake ETH in a compliant environment.</li>
</ol>
How Does It Work?
Simply put, restaking works like this:
<ol>
 <li>You deposit ETH into a platform (e.g., Ether.fi).</li>
 <li>Your ETH is staked in Ethereum and simultaneously restaked in EigenLayer.</li>
 <li>You receive a liquid token (eETH, pufETH, ezETH) that reflects your restaking position.</li>
 <li>This token can be used as collateral, traded, or used to earn income in DeFi protocols.</li>
 <li>Yield comes from two sources: base staking and AVS rewards (calculation and distribution order are set by AVS itself). At the same time, operators and AVS protocols independently determine the structure of remuneration distribution and the size of the operator's percentage (split), which directly affects the final profitability of users.</li>
</ol>
Advantages of Restaking
The most important things that come from&nbsp; restaking are:
<ul>
 <li>Yield maximization — ETH participates in two reward systems simultaneously.</li>
 <li>Liquidity preservation — tokens remain in circulation through LRT.</li>
 <li>DeFi composability — LRTs are easily integrated into lending, farming, and decentralized funds.</li>
 <li>Institutional applicability — restaking is formalized in regulated products.</li>
 <li>Network strengthening — by extending Ethereum’s economic security to AVSs, restaking helps reinforce the ecosystem’s resilience.</li>
</ul>
Risks and Challenges
Restaking opens up enormous potential, but also carries new types of risks:
<ul>
 <li>Withdrawal delay — restaked assets may have extended or uncertain withdrawal periods, especially when tied to AVS commitments, which can limit liquidity and flexibility.</li>
 <li>Slashing (penalties) — the stake may be partially or fully slashed under AVS-defined conditions. If operators violate the rules or if the slashing parameters set by the AVS are triggered, this can lead to losses for restakers or LRT holders. On EigenLayer, the slashing mechanism is configurable by each AVS, meaning that operators delegating their stake to an AVS bear the corresponding risk.</li>
 <li>AVS risks. If an AVS malfunctions or is compromised, LRT holders may suffer losses.</li>
 <li>Smart contract errors — high technical complexity requires thorough audits.</li>
 <li>Systemic interdependence — with high interconnection between AVSs, there is a risk of operator collusion, correlated failures, or unintended slashing events, which can trigger cascading losses across multiple protocols.</li>
 <li>Regulatory uncertainty — in many countries, the regulatory treatment of LRTs varies by jurisdiction and remains under review..</li>
</ul>
Nevertheless, leading projects are actively developing insurance mechanisms (coverage funds compensating losses from slashing or AVS failures), distributed validators (DVT — technology that splits validator duties among multiple independent nodes to reduce single-point failures), and transparent risk management models (systems that disclose slashing parameters, operator performance, and AVS configurations to users).
Restaking and the Future of DeFi
So, restaking is not just another DeFi trend, but an evolutionary stage in the development of Ethereum. It combines security, yield, liquidity, and shared security principles, creating a bridge between staking, infrastructure, and institutional investment.
In the coming years, restaking will become the standard for DeFi projects, and Liquid Restaking Tokens will become a critical asset class, enabling the movement of capital in the new, more productive Ethereum economy.
