In the summer of 2020, when DeFi was still wild and chaotic, few could imagine that a small on-chain prediction market would one day become a billion-dollar information oracle. The story of Polymarket has never been only about trading—it is about pricing human belief, and turning market consensus into a form of data.
&nbsp;
Today, regulators from Singapore to Washington must take it seriously. A platform once forced into the gray zone is now being embraced by traditional finance giants, including the New York Stock Exchange’s parent company ICE, which plans to invest up to $2 billion at an $8 billion valuation. Polymarket’s journey from a “decentralized gambling site” to a regulated data platform marks a new law in Web3: when speculation becomes transparent and information moves fast enough, prediction is no longer gambling—it becomes data monetization.
&nbsp;
<h2 class="p1" id="speed-scale-and-trust-the-structure-revolution-of-on-chain-prediction-markets">SPEED, SCALE, AND TRUST: THE STRUCTURE REVOLUTION OF ON-CHAIN PREDICTION MARKETS</h2>
&nbsp;
To understand Polymarket’s breakthrough, we must start with its mechanism. Unlike early AMM-based prediction markets, Polymarket uses an order book model. Prices are shown as the midpoint between bid and ask, and when the spread widens, the latest trade becomes the reference. This design makes trading feel more like a real exchange, with less slippage and less manipulation.
&nbsp;
For settlement, Polymarket relies on UMA’s Optimistic Oracle. Each resolution proposal requires about $750 of collateral and a two-hour challenge window. This “optimistic arbitration” system ties truth to economic incentives: if a proposal is wrong, challengers are rewarded; if it’s right, the proposer keeps the stake. Trust comes not from authority, but from risk.
&nbsp;
By mid-2025, Polymarket’s trading volume had surpassed $14 billion in total, with a record $1.43 billion in September alone. Even more striking, the supply side grew faster than demand: in August, users created over 13,800 new markets, nearly twenty every hour. From the U.S. election and Bitcoin halving to questions like “Will OpenAI release GPT-5,” Polymarket has become a live dashboard of global sentiment. In this market, liquidity is truth—the more people trade on a belief, the more precisely that belief is priced.
&nbsp;
<h2 class="p1" id="from-regulatory-grey-zone-to-institutional-embrace">FROM REGULATORY GREY ZONE TO INSTITUTIONAL EMBRACE</h2>
&nbsp;
The rise of Polymarket was not without pain. In 2022, the U.S. CFTC charged the platform with operating unregistered event markets, resulting in a $1.4 million fine and a ban from serving U.S. users. Many thought it would vanish. Instead, the incident became the start of its transformation.
&nbsp;
Polymarket pivoted globally, expanding among European and Asian users. Its defense was simple: full transparency. Trades and settlements were on-chain, custody stayed in users’ hands, and arbitration was community-driven. It evolved into a quantitative barometer of collective belief—people didn’t just bet for profit; they bet to understand the world.
&nbsp;
Then, in fall 2025, came the headline that shocked Wall Street: ICE announced a plan to invest up to $2 billion into Polymarket, valuing it at $8 billion. Beyond the capital, ICE intends to distribute Polymarket’s event data through its global financial data channels. That means analysts and traders might soon see “Polymarket probability of Biden winning” on Bloomberg terminals. What began as a crypto experiment is now turning into a next-generation probability data provider. If the first wave of crypto tried to put assets on-chain, Polymarket is doing the opposite—it is putting the future itself on-chain.

&nbsp;
Compared to licensed rival Kalshi, Polymarket still faces hurdles. Kalshi holds full CFTC approval and partners with brokers like Robinhood to offer event contracts as regulated products. Polymarket, in contrast, follows a “surround strategy”: staying non-custodial, avoiding the legal definition of derivatives, and relying on partnerships with ICE and Stocktwits to re-enter the U.S. market.
&nbsp;
Many now describe Polymarket as building “the Bloomberg of prediction markets.” Here, data—not fees—is the business model: • Retail users provide liquidity of opinion through trading. • Institutions subscribe to probability data for trading models. • The platform monetizes the value of information itself.
&nbsp;
This model fits perfectly with the late-2020s macro trend. In an era of AI and information overload, the scarcest asset is not data—but conviction. Polymarket lets money vote and belief be measured. It turns consensus into a verifiable, tradable signal.
&nbsp;
Still, the path ahead is uncertain. Regulatory risks remain; event cycles fade when elections end; and Kalshi’s compliant expansion could limit Polymarket’s room in the U.S. But as the team often says: “We don’t predict the future—we measure it.” In that measurement, money becomes the signal, the blockchain becomes the scale, and Polymarket may well become the most precise instrument of trust in our digital age.
