The crypto market is experiencing a sharp divergence. While Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) maintain relatively stable positions, the rest of the altcoin market is under serious stress. A large number of leveraged altcoin positions remain open, leaving traders exposed to sudden price drops.

In recent days, a noticeable shift in market momentum triggered a wave of liquidations, with hundreds of millions wiped out in hours. This is what many analysts are now calling the beginning of an “altcoin liquidation cascade” — a rapid, snowball-like effect that occurs when mass sell-offs trigger more forced liquidations.

What is a Liquidation Cascade?

A liquidation cascade happens when long or short positions get forcefully closed due to margin calls, which leads to further price movement and more liquidations. In the case of altcoins, many of which are already volatile by nature, the effects can be extreme.

Traders using high leverage are particularly at risk. When prices dip, margin calls trigger automatic sell orders, leading to rapid price declines and further margin calls — creating a feedback loop of destruction. With so many altcoin positions still open, the threat of another wave of liquidations looms large.

Experts warn that the worst may not be over. While BTC and ETH remain resilient, altcoins are showing signs of weakening support. Market analysts suggest that unless there’s a strong bounce or shift in sentiment, more pain could be ahead for altcoin holders.

This could be a historic moment in crypto markets — a “legendary” event for better or worse. Traders are advised to reduce leverage, manage risk, and avoid overexposure in these uncertain conditions. The coming days could shape the direction of the market heading into Q4.
