Market Outlook: Altcoin Breakout on the Horizon, Says Michael van de Poppe
Crypto strategist Michael van de Poppe suggests that altcoins may soon break free from their extended slump, marking the beginning of a long-awaited altcoin season.
As Bitcoin continues to dominate the crypto landscape, currently controlling over 64.6% of the total market capitalization (as per CoinMarketCap), historical patterns suggest that a capital rotation into altcoins could be imminent.
Most altcoins have seen weak performance since late 2021, entering a prolonged phase of stagnation and consolidation. Van de Poppe sees this as an opportunity rather than a setback — a crucial accumulation period before the next upward surge.
Bitcoin Dominance and the Looming Shift
Bitcoin's surge to a new record high of $111,980 has captured investor attention and market momentum. However, van de Poppe believes that altcoins are on the verge of stepping back into the spotlight. Historically, after Bitcoin’s rally cools, profit-taking often leads to capital flowing into altcoins — a phenomenon known as altseason.
“The signs are there,” van de Poppe noted in a recent update. “Altcoins have consistently followed Bitcoin’s major rallies. We're nearing that point again.”
He emphasizes that while Bitcoin’s high dominance often suppresses altcoin growth temporarily, it also sets the stage for the next wave of rotation into riskier, high-reward assets.
A Look Back: Why Altcoins Fell Behind
Since the end of 2021, altcoins have been largely underwhelming. Although some newer projects — especially meme coins and alternative Layer-1 blockchains — experienced brief surges, legacy altcoins like Ethereum, Litecoin, and EOS failed to meet expectations.
Van de Poppe recalls that in the last cycle, altcoin gains peaked well before Bitcoin reached its top of around $65,000. The harsh 2022 correction that followed wiped out much of the market, leading to steep declines and leaving many investors hesitant to re-enter.
“The cooldown was brutal,” he said. “It left even the most seasoned traders doubting whether altcoins would recover.”
Macro Pressures Weighing on Investor Sentiment
Beyond market cycles, broader economic forces are playing a key role in delaying altcoin momentum. Persistent inflation concerns, uncertain central bank policies, and the looming threat of global recession have all pushed investors toward more conservative assets like Bitcoin and gold.
“Right now, people want safety,” van de Poppe explained. “They’re not chasing risk — they’re preserving capital.”
Gold’s recent all-time high is a reflection of this sentiment, signaling that risk appetite across the board remains low — especially for the more volatile segments of the crypto market.
Accumulation Phase Nearing Its End?
The crypto space remains divided: while some see the market as still bearish, others — van de Poppe among them — believe we’re at the early stage of a new bull run. He argues that now is the time for long-term investors to quietly build their positions in altcoins before the next wave begins.
“Retail is still on the sidelines,” he said. “That’s usually when smart money steps in. When altcoins start moving again, it’ll happen fast — and the biggest gains will go to those who positioned early.”
Although van de Poppe didn’t provide direct investment advice, his message was clear: historically, these quiet phases often precede major rallies. For those with a long-term view, the current market presents a rare opportunity.
