A recent discussion on X has reignited the debate over XRP’s intended market, following remarks made by Dilip Rao, the former Global Head of Infrastructure Innovation at Ripple. 
Crypto influencer John Squire shared a tweet emphasizing Rao’s position on XRP, <a href="https://x.com/TheCryptoSquire/status/1901181645107109918" class="broken_link">stating</a>: “BOOOOOOM!! Former Global Head of Infrastructure Innovation at @Ripple, Dilip Rao, confirms: #XRP is NOT meant for retail!&nbsp; Every single $XRP will be like GOLD!” 
The discussion stems from an interview where Rao addressed the role of <a href="https://timestabloid.com/anodos-co-founder-sends-crucial-message-to-xrp-holders/">retail investors</a> in the XRP market. He acknowledged that many individuals engage in speculative trading but clarified that this is not Ripple’s primary focus.

<h2 id="b-dilip-rao-s-perspective-on-xrp-use-case-b">Dilip Rao’s Perspective on XRP Use Case</h2> 
During the interview, Rao was asked whether the speculative nature of cryptocurrency trading hindered the broader adoption of digital assets. He explained that XRP is traded on approximately 150-200 exchanges worldwide. However, he described much of this trading as “shallow” and stated that it does not align with Ripple’s strategic goals. 
He further elaborated, “What we are pursuing is the use of XRP as a financial asset by sophisticated institutions as a bridging mechanism. So does this hurt or harm? Well, it creates a lot of noise and you know we certainly don’t want that much noise but we’re waiting, and for example this last quarter the bulk of XRP sales were to institutional investors. And as this transitions away from retail to institutions who start to use it for wholesale financial usage, that’s when the turning point will come.” 
Rao’s comments suggest that Ripple envisions XRP primarily as a tool for institutional transactions rather than for retail speculation. His assertion that a shift toward institutional adoption represents a key turning point implies that the company’s strategic focus lies in large-scale financial applications rather than serving individual traders.

<h2 id="b-pushback-from-the-xrp-community-b">Pushback from the XRP Community</h2> 
Despite Squire’s interpretation of Rao’s comments, some members of the <a href="https://timestabloid.com/moonpay-reveals-xrp-biggest-surprise-of-2024-fox-business-journalist-reacts/">XRP community </a>have challenged the claim that XRP is “not meant for retail.” A prominent response came from X user Moon Lambo, who argued that Rao’s words were being misrepresented. 
Moon Lambo countered Squire’s assertion. He <a href="https://x.com/MoonLamboio/status/1901184508986081330" class="broken_link">stated</a>, “He never said $XRP isn’t for retail. He cited that Ripple isn’t pursuing a retail use case, which is true. Their clients are businesses. Also, if retail could no longer access $XRP for any reason, that would dramatically and negatively impact price. So this idea of $XRP not being for retail is very negative.” 
He further referenced David Schwartz, one of the original architects of XRP, who has previously stated that XRP was designed to be a more efficient version of Bitcoin. According to Moon Lambo, this reinforces the idea that XRP is accessible to everyone, including retail investors, due to its decentralized and open-source nature. 
<h2 id="b-the-ongoing-debate-b">The Ongoing Debate</h2> 
The debate over XRP’s role in the financial ecosystem remains contentious. While Ripple has historically focused on <a href="https://timestabloid.com/ripple-licenses-that-enable-banks-like-bank-of-america-and-santander-to-use-xrp/">institutional adoption</a>, the token itself continues to be widely traded and held by retail investors.
