Rhodium Enterprises, a major player in the Bitcoin <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/texas-residents-challenge-bitcoin-mining-industrys-impact-on-power-grid-and-communities/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">mining industry</a>, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for several of its subsidiaries. This move, confirmed by court filings on August 24, 2024, highlights the growing financial pressures within the industry as companies struggle with rising costs and market volatility, according to <a href="https://theminermag.com/news/2024-08-24/rhodium-bitcoin-bankruptcy/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Theminermag.com</a>.
The subsidiaries included in the filing—Rhodium Encore, Jordan HPC, Rhodium JV, Rhodium 2.0, Rhodium 10MW, and Rhodium 30MW—represent a significant portion of Rhodium's operations. The consolidated filing under Rhodium Encore reveals that the company’s total liabilities range between $50 million and $100 million, while its assets are estimated between $100 million and $500 million.
Rhodium’s financial difficulties have been building for months, with reports earlier this month revealing that the company failed to repay $54 million in loans due in late July 2024. These loans were tied to Rhodium Encore and Rhodium 2.0, for which Rhodium had raised $78 million in 2021. The failure to repay these loans has now culminated in the company seeking bankruptcy protection.
In addition to the bankruptcy filing, Rhodium has submitted a motion to the court requesting a decision on whether it can assume certain executory contracts with Whinstone US, a subsidiary of Riot Platforms. This move is crucial, as Rhodium hosted 2.7 exahash per second (EH/s) of its <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/impending-bitcoin-halving-may-trigger-major-hashrate-decline-say-experts/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">hashrate</a> at Riot’s Rockdale site operated by Whinstone US, while also energizing 1.1 EH/s at its own Temple site.
The relationship between Rhodium and Whinstone US has been strained, leading to an ongoing arbitration case where Rhodium is seeking at least $67 million in damages. The outcome of this dispute could significantly impact Rhodium’s restructuring efforts and its ability to navigate through bankruptcy.
