    <p data-sourcepos="12:1-12:40">In a landmark move, the United States is considering officially recognizing <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/italian-banking-giant-embraces-bitcoin/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin</a> and other cryptocurrencies as “money.” The Treasury Department plans to expand the definition of “money” in the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) to include crypto assets. This change would mean that crypto transactions would be subject to the same reporting requirements as traditional money transactions.</p>
    <p data-sourcepos="14:1-14:272">Specifically, this means that banks and businesses that manage cryptocurrencies would be required <a href="https://www.ethnews.com/experts-predict-life-changing-gains-for-new-cryptos-like-rollblock-leaving-ethereum-classic-etc-and-bitcoin-cash-bch-in-the-dust/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">to report</a> to the government any transaction exceeding $10,000. This measure aims to increase transparency and combat potential illegal activities in the cryptocurrency space.</p>
    <h2 data-sourcepos="16:1-16:21" id="impact-on-privacy">Impact on Privacy</h2>
    <p data-sourcepos="18:1-18:128">However, the proposed change also raises questions about privacy. The Bank Secrecy Act generally requires financial institutions to keep their customers’ data confidential. By including cryptocurrencies in the BSA, tax authorities and law enforcement agencies could gain easier access to information about crypto transactions.</p>
    <p data-sourcepos="22:1-22:354">The US move aligns with the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), which aims to regulate the operation of cryptocurrency exchanges internationally. A key FATF recommendation is the so-called “Travel Rule”, which requires crypto service providers to identify the sender and recipient of a transaction and share data about their users.</p>
    <h2 data-sourcepos="24:1-24:39" id="criticism-from-the-crypto-community">Criticism from the Crypto Community</h2>
    <p data-sourcepos="26:1-26:83">The “Travel Rule” and similar measures face criticism from the crypto community, as they are seen as violating the principles of privacy and anonymity that are central to many cryptocurrencies.</p>
    <p data-sourcepos="30:1-30:352">The final decision on the proposed change is expected in 2025. If implemented, it would represent a significant step towards more comprehensive regulation of cryptocurrencies in the US.
