<p>As the blockchain and augmented reality (AR) industries continue to evolve, spatial mapping has emerged as a critical technology at their intersection. Companies like Niantic, known for Pokémon GO, are pushing the boundaries of what's possible with large-scale AR experiences. However, blockchain-based projects like OVR are aiming to compete by leveraging decentralized networks of mappers.</p>
<p>OVR, a blockchain-based spatial mapping platform, is taking a unique approach to building a comprehensive database of 3D maps. Unlike Niantic, which primarily collects data through gameplay, OVR incentivizes users to intentionally map locations using their smartphones. This strategy has allowed them to rapidly expand their mapping coverage, with aims to reach 150,000 mapped locations by mid-2025.</p>

These maps could potentially be used not just within OVR's own ecosystem, but also licensed to other companies developing AR and spatial computing applications.</p>
<p>While tech giants like Meta and Google have significant resources, blockchain-based projects like OVR may have an edge in rapidly building global mapping databases. The ability to incentivize mappers worldwide using cryptocurrency micropayments could allow for faster and more comprehensive data collection compared to traditional methods.</p>
<p>As spatial computing becomes more prevalent, the demand for high-quality 3D maps of real-world locations is likely to increase dramatically. This could create opportunities for blockchain projects that can effectively crowdsource mapping data while maintaining quality control. The race to map the world in 3D is heating up, and blockchain technology may play a crucial role in this emerging field.</p>
