Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, renowned figures in the cryptocurrency industry, recently made headlines by donating $1 million each in Bitcoin to former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign. However, this substantial contribution, aimed at supporting Trump’s pro-crypto stance, has been refunded because it exceeds the federal donation limit permissible to a candidate. 
The twins, who founded the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, publicly stated their support. Despite their enthusiasm, the Trump campaign was forced to refund the excess amount over the legal donation cap, which stands at $844,600 per individual. 
A campaign official, speaking on condition of anonymity, <a href="https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/winklevoss-twins-refunded-after-trump-crypto-gift-exceeded-limit-1.2088174" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> the refund process without specifying whether it was returned in cryptocurrency or its fiat equivalent. Such limits are strictly enforced to maintain fairness and transparency in electoral financing. 
Direct support for Trump was provided by the Winklevoss twins who many times before, supported an approach to the regulation of assets within the cryptocurrencies and cited Trump’s motivation for their support. Tyler recently <a href="https://www.cryptotimes.io/2024/06/21/winklevoss-twins-donate-2m-in-bitcoin-to-trump-campaign/">Winklevoss publicly declared Trump as</a> the “pro-Bitcoin, pro-crypto, and pro-business choice” on social media platform X. 
Trump’s campaign has been using the tools associated with his campaign to appeal to the voters from the crypto community and those who feel that the current administration is overregulating them.
