Intelion Group, a major player in Russia's industrial mining sector, announced plans to purchase 12 billion rubles worth of server equipment for AI computing. This investment will support the construction of a new data center in the Samara region. This project underscores the growing demand for AI infrastructure, with global energy consumption for AI development expected to increase by over 60% annually, and Russia’s AI <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/minnesota-man-faces-accusations-of-electricity-theft-for-bitcoin-mining/">electricity</a> consumption predicted to reach 4.5 GW by 2035, according to <a href="https://ultramining.com/">Ultramining</a>. 
Intelion is spinning off its high-performance computing operations into a new subsidiary, Intelion Cloud, to manage this venture. Intelion Cloud will focus on providing AI industry clients with high-performance computing power. "Industrial mining allows us to create and maintain large-scale infrastructure built for the future, significantly more efficient return on investment due to the high demand for computing power at the moment," said Maxim Vyaznikov, head of Intelion Cloud. 
The new data center's first stage is set to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2024, with a total investment of 4.3 billion rubles over the next two and a half years. The facility will feature state-of-the-art servers equipped with Nvidia A100 series graphics accelerators, and the Intelion Cloud service platform will launch in the third quarter of 2024, offering per-second billing for server rentals. 
The rising demand for <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/minnesota-man-faces-accusations-of-electricity-theft-for-bitcoin-mining/">electricity</a> to power AI systems presents additional revenue opportunities for <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/russias-bitcoin-gold-rush-mining-machine-influx-outpaces-rest-of-the-world/">Bitcoin miners</a> through renting out data center infrastructure. This trend is also evident in the US, where <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/blockstream-aims-for-bitcoin-profit-with-mining-rig-investment-ahead-of-2024-halving/">mining companies</a> are leasing computing power directly to AI-focused firms. For example, <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-mining-giant-core-scientific-prepares-for-post-bankruptcy-comeback/">Core Scientific</a> recently signed a 12-year agreement with cloud service provider CoreWeave, worth over $3.5 billion, to supply 200 MW of power for AI models. This deal is expected to generate approximately $290 million in annual revenue for <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-mining-giant-core-scientific-prepares-for-post-bankruptcy-comeback/">Core Scientific</a>.
