Diversified Production LLC began bitcoin mining on previously fracked wells without obtaining necessary state permits, resulting in regulatory violations. Despite these initial infractions, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) eventually approved the operation, according to <a href="https://www.ehn.org/crypto-mining-revives-old-pennsylvania-gas-wells-2668452529.html" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Ehn</a>.
Local communities and environmental advocates have voiced strong opposition, citing increased noise pollution, <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/pennsylvania-a-new-hub-for-cryptomining-ignites-environmental-concerns/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">air pollution</a>, and inadequate regulatory oversight. Holly May, a natural resources professional, expressed her frustration, noting the substantial investments made in habitat restoration that are now compromised by the mining activities. "We have invested tens of thousands of dollars in habitat work on that game lands. Now, it’s really disturbing to use that whole back section… not to mention the greenhouse gas emissions," she stated.
The concern extends beyond immediate environmental impact, with broader implications for greenhouse gas emissions. The operation on low-producing wells is expected to significantly escalate emissions, potentially setting a precedent for similar ventures. This raises questions about the efficacy of current regulatory frameworks and their ability to mitigate such environmental threats.
