A group of current and former AI company employees, including those from Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Alphabet’s Google DeepMind, raised concerns about the risks posed by the emerging AI technology.

The letter, released on Tuesday, emphasizes the need for a “right to warn about artificial intelligence,” addressing the industry’s secretive nature. Eleven current and former OpenAI employees and two from Google DeepMind, including one from Anthropic, signed the letter. 
The <a href="https://righttowarn.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">letter points out</a> that AI companies hold critical non-public information about their systems’ capabilities and risks but lack strong obligations to share this with governments or civil society. This lack of transparency raises concerns about potential risks and harms associated with AI technology. 
OpenAI responded by defending its practices, citing internal reporting avenues and a cautious approach to releasing new technology. However, Google has yet to comment on the matter. 
This development reflects ongoing concerns about the potential harms of AI technology, which have heightened with the recent AI boom. Despite public commitments to safe development, researchers and employees highlight the lack of effective oversight as AI tools amplify existing societal risks or introduce new ones. 
The open letter advocates for four key principles, including transparency, accountability, and protection for employees raising safety concerns. It calls for companies to refrain from enforcing non-disparagement agreements that hinder employees from discussing AI-related risks and to establish mechanisms for anonymous reporting to board members. 
The letter’s release follows the resignations of key figures at OpenAI, with safety researcher Jan Leike raising concerns about the company’s shift away from prioritizing safety. This incident, along with reported restrictive measures on employee speech, underscores broader issues around transparency and employee rights in the AI industry. 
As AI continues to evolve rapidly, calls for enhanced safety measures and whistleblower protections are likely to remain at the forefront of industry discussions.
