Jian Wen, a former fast food and hospitality worker, has been jailed for 6 years and eight months for being involved in money laundering activities involving approximately 150 Bitcoins.
The laundering activities were executed over multiple transactions between 2017 and 2022. On Friday, May 24, London’s Southwark Crown Court announced an 80-month prison sentence for her. She was found guilty on March 20 at the court.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-how-jian-wen-raised-suspicion-strong">How Jian Wen Raised Suspicion</h3>
Authorities suspected some illegal activities in 2018 when the accused was found involved in buying luxurious properties in London. She bought properties valued at $29.7 Million, $15.8 Million and $5.7 Million. She had owned around 150 Bitcoin when the case was initiated.
However, the court eventually seized 61,000 bitcoins, now valued at around $4.1 Billion, became the UK’s largest crypto seizure ever.&nbsp;
Wen was accused of converting significant amounts of <a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2024/05/24/algorand-fires-shots-at-giants-like-ethereum-solana-and-bitcoin/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin</a> into cash and assets. The suspensions were increased when she was found living in a luxurious property in London. Additionally, she was making attempts to purchase other high-value properties despite reporting modest income in 2015 and 2016.&nbsp;
These activities triggered anti-money laundering checks.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-how-did-they-execute-such-activities-strong">How did they execute such activities?</h3>
The funds that were seized from Jian Wen were found to be linked with an investment fraud operation in China led by Yadi Zhang, Wen’s employer.
Judge Sally-Ann Hales, who was responsible for this case, reported that more than 128,000 investors had invested approximately $5.6 Billion into the scheme. Moreover, some proceeds were already converted to Bitcoin and smuggled out of China.
Wen was accused of converting larger quantities of Bitcoin into cash and assets for Zhang.
Zhang and his subordinate, Wen, claimed to run an international jewelry business, Wen being the face of the business. They even took loan for Wen’s private schooling in the UK and bought properties in Dubai.
Zhang was the mastermind behind the fraud and Wen was not the original fraudster but she was aware of all the illegal activities by June 2019. Since then, she was handling all the criminal proceeds, reported Judge Hales.
Zhang disappeared after the search and it was further discovered that Zhang’s real name was Zhimin Qian as per her personal diaries. She is yet to be found, as per the reports.
