The letter, sent to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, underscores the extensive nature of crypto mining in Iran. According to the senators, the industry has become so large that it has occasionally overwhelmed Iran's energy infrastructure, leading to widespread blackouts and temporary halts in mining operations.
The senators also pointed out Iran's troubling history with crypto-related money laundering and its government's alleged connections to ransomware groups utilizing digital currencies.
