It has been <a href="https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2024-04/pope-francis-g7-summit-italy-artificial-intelligence.html#:~:text=Pope%20Francis%20will%20take%20part%20in%20the%20upcoming,in%20the%20session%20devoted%20to%20Artificial%20Intelligence%20%28AI%29." target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">confirmed</a> that Pope Francis will attend part of the upcoming <a href="https://www.g7italy.it/en/summit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-wpel-link="external">G7 Summit</a> in Italy focused on artificial intelligence ethics and regulations. This would be the first time a pontiff has participated in a G7 meeting.&nbsp;
According to a report, the June 13-15 summit in Puglia will bring together leaders of the world’s seven largest advanced economies, including the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom. AI governance and developing an ethical framework will be the main topics of discussion.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who holds the rotating G7 presidency, invited the Pope and announced his confirmation this week. “His presence honors our nation and the entire G7,” Meloni stated. “I am convinced the Pope’s presence will provide a decisive contribution to defining a regulatory, ethical, and cultural framework for artificial intelligence.”
The Vatican has increasingly weighed in on AI ethics, including with the 2020 “Rome Call for AI Ethics” document. In his 2024 World Peace Day message, Pope Francis urged cultivating moral wisdom to ensure AI serves human flourishing.
