On 20th, the United Nations (UN) came out with a report divulging North Korea’s involvement in cryptocurrency hacking. Raising concerns about digital investments’ security globally. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council report also show that cybercrime accounts for a significant portion of North Korea’s foreign currency earnings, around $3 billion (450 billion yen) from crowd-sourced crypto hacks.&nbsp;
However, the global crypto market cap currently stands at $2.55T with a 6.8% surge over the past day. Even though there is a 10% decrease in the trading volume but the largest and the second largest crypto have seen a 6% and 10% surge over the past day. <a href="https://news.todayq.com/bitcoin-whales-on-buying-spree-adds-4451-btc-amid-price-dip/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">BTC</a> stands at $67k as of press time, and ETH is changing hands at $3.5k. North Korea gets most of its forex reserves from hacking, the UN Security Council report suggested. About half of North Korea’s foreign exchange earnings come from hacking cryptocurrency-based companies and virtual currencies, as per Nikkei. North Korea also used cyberattacks to get around international sanctions and fund illegal activities as per reports.
Moreover, the investigation that spanned through July 2023 to January 2024, revealed alarming things about North Korea’s cyber capabilities. Almost 40% of the funds used to build weapons of mass destruction were used for hacking activities, according to UN reports.

Even if this report isn’t legally binding&nbsp; the Security Council should still consider imposing additional punishments on NK’s criminals.
Further raising concerns about illicit arms trade is the fact that Israel thinks Hamas has weapons made in North Korea.&nbsp;
Whatever the regime says, the international community is watching closely and trying to figure out how to deal with the country’s internet warfare capabilities. Keeping up with changing cyber threats requires a collective response.
As for its nuclear program, it launched at least 7 ballistic missiles in the past six months up until Jan. Additionally, <a href="https://news.todayq.com/u-s-south-korea-japan-discuss-north-koreas-illicit-activities-with-stolen-crypto/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Japan</a> has reportedly also introduced a new “tactical nuclear attack submarine” that can attack from underwater.
North Korea is still developing nuclear weapons despite the United Nations imposing economic sanctions by limiting inflow of funds and banning imports and exports. Actually NK is importing refined petroleum products subject to sanctions and exporting luxury goods. North Korea’s trade volume in 2023 has reportedly exceeded that of 2022.
