<p>We&#39;re starting a series of explainer articles for our recently released #qtumroadmap. This one will focus on the Ordinals, the Ordinals protocol on Qtum.<br /></p><p><img src="https://downloads.ctfassets.net/658qz9008zym/fuM6fcTx4yYnHOPiCTvjC/5b979f464733ce5b74807c6aa63dee79/Qtum_Development_Format_Jan_-_April_2024.png" /><br /></p><h3 id="what-are-ordinals">What Are Ordinals?</h3><p>Qtum is excited to announce the integration of the Ordinals protocol, enhancing its blockchain capabilities by embracing new technologies alongside established standards like ERC-721 and ERC-1155. Leveraging its foundation on Bitcoin Core and Ethereum, Qtum supports Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, including Taproot, facilitating the use of Ordinals.</p><p>Ordinals introduce a method for uniquely identifying individual satoshis (the smallest units of Bitcoin and QTUM) by assigning them sequential numbers, transforming them from fungible to distinguishable or non-fungible units. This concept allows for the embedding of unique characteristics onto each satoshi, utilizing transaction metadata fields without requiring protocol modifications. This approach leverages the blockchain&#39;s immutability and chronological block ordering.</p><h3 id="latest-development-update">Latest development update:  </h3><p><strong>Done: </strong> The first version of the Indexer API has been implemented in the test environment and currently provides two interfaces.  </p><p><strong>Working on:</strong> The Index data source parses events from its own on-chain by hand and switches to reading events from the Trust Source ORD.  Reference to librc20 to maintain two different balance types: Transferable Balance and Available Balance.  Event processing and verification logic goes through the BRC20 specifications to ensure compliance.   We hope the Qtum community is as excited as the team, this is only the first step of an evolved Qtum ecosystem that will allow developers to build and make the most of our tools.
