Bakkt, a crypto platform launched with much excitement in 2018 by the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, has issued a warning regarding its ability to sustain its operations. In adocument filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Bakkt stated, “We might not be able to continue as a going concern,” citing concerns about the sufficiency of its cash reserves to fund operations for the next 12 months. The company, established by Intercontinental Exchange, aimed initially to facilitate bitcoin purchases for Starbucks customers. Future <a href="https://news.todayq.com/u-s-senator-urges-doj-probe-of-binance-and-tether-for-terrorism-funding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">U.S. Senator</a> Kelly Loeffler served as Bakkt’s first CEO. Bakkt had some tough times, like stopping its digital wallet service last year. But now, it’s concentrating on providing crypto custody and trading services.&nbsp;
Bakkt, backed by Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, had ambitious beginnings. Initially, it aimed to facilitate bitcoin transactions for Starbucks customers. Despite efforts to innovate, including the introduction of a digital wallet in 2021, Bakkt struggled to gain traction in the market.
Despite its high-profile backers and ambitious goals, Bakkt’s stock has plummeted from over $40 in 2021 to just $1.45 at the time of this filing. To address its financial woes, Bakkt is seeking to raise to $150 million through the sale of securities. This infusion of capital could provide a lifeline for the struggling company. Bakkt’s problems show how tough it is for <a href="https://news.todayq.com/uk-fca-approves-just-38-out-of-291-crypto-companies-to-operate-within-the-country/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto companies.</a> People like digital money, but it’s hard for businesses in this area because the prices go up and down a lot, and there are rules they have to follow. Back in 2018, Starbucks said it wanted to work with Bakkt, Microsoft, and others to let customers use digital money to buy things. They wanted to change currencies like Bitcoin into regular money so people could spend it at Starbucks.
Starbucks’ vice president, Maria Smith, said, “As the flagship retailer, Starbucks will play a pivotal role in developing practical, trusted, and regulated applications for consumers to convert their digital assets into US dollars for use at Starbucks,”
However, the adoption of crypto for everyday transactions has been slow. Skeptics have raised concerns about their volatility and suitability as a medium of exchange.
Even though there are difficulties, people are still trying to make it easier to use cryptocurrencies for buying things. The Lightning Network, for example, offers a solution for faster and more efficient Bitcoin transactions.
