On January 31, the Commission tagged Bitcoin as harmful to the environment and a potential risk to the region's energy security. These assertions could lead to significant regulatory actions, including carbon taxes and stringent energy usage rules for mining operations, according to <a href="https://beincrypto.com/could-eu-regulate-bitcoin-mining-out-existence/">Beincrypto</a>. 
The report suggests empowering the European Central Bank (ECB) to set ESG guidelines for <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-miners-set-for-a-tough-ride-as-2024-halving-nears-jp-morgan/">Bitcoin investments</a>, possibly leading to a de facto ban on BTC mining by 2025. As part of these guidelines, the ECB might disincentivize or outright prohibit investments in Bitcoin, wielding its regulatory clout to reshape the investment landscape. 
Daniel Batten, a crypto environmentalist, and venture capital investor, warns of the EU setting a precedent that other nations might follow. The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has already indicated intentions to advocate for these standards globally. 
Despite the pushback from Bitcoin advocates who point to the increasing use of renewable energy in mining, the EC's stance is firm. This could be part of a broader strategy by central banks to favor centralized digital currencies over decentralized cryptos.
