A 29-year-old hacker accused of masterminding an intricate plot involving over a million virtual servers was captured by Ukrainian authorities used compromised servers linked to an unnamed American organization to turn the powerful network into a <a href="https://news.todayq.com/chinas-aggressive-bitcoin-mining-expansion-after-btc-etf-buzz/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bitcoin mining</a> operation. What did the accused hack? 
The hacker, whose name is yet to be known, is said to have started his illegal operations in 2021. His initial move involved brute-forcing his way into 1,500 accounts associated with a subsidiary of “one of the world’s largest ecommerce companies.” Unfortunately, the specific company involved has not been revealed.
After breaking in, the hacker constructed a vast virtual computer network. These servers were then surreptitiously loaded with cryptojackers—malicious software designed to mine cryptocurrencies without the knowledge or consent of the device owners. What did the Ukrainian authorities do next? 
According to the information that Ukrainian cyberpolice later released, the person mined cryptocurrency with the <a href="https://news.todayq.com/introducing-ton-space-self-custody-wallet-in-telegram-available-to-developers-now/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">TON wallet</a> with skill, accumulating transactions worth about $2 million. E-media, bank cards, SIM cards, computer equipment, and other vital evidence were seized following the hacker’s arrest on January 9. Criminal charges are now pending against the defendant for his alleged cyber activities.
Recognizing the urgency of the issue requires an understanding of the purpose behind these cyberattacks. A lot of resources are needed for cryptocurrency mining, including strong computers and a lot of energy. Hackers take advantage of the powerful computational capacity of business servers by breaching them, and the victim is left to foot the majority of the associated costs.
Analysts suggest that for every worth of cryptocurrency mined, the victimized company faces approximately in damages. The attackers’ plan relies on the servers becoming too busy mining to fulfill their intended function, which makes them sluggish and raises the victim company’s operating expenses. This hacker’s choice of cryptojacking for mining Monero (XMR), a privacy-oriented cryptocurrency known for its supposed untraceability, aligns with a common trend among cybercriminals. XMRig, a popular cryptominer, is often employed for such operations.
