Venezuela is bidding farewell to its controversial Petro cryptocurrency, marking the end of a more than five-year venture. According to the reports,&nbsp; this decision comes as a message displayed on the Patria Platform. That is the only website where Petro transactions occurred and it hinted at the crypto’s impending closure. When was ‘Petro’ token introduced? 
Launched by President Nicolas Maduro in February 2018, the Petro (PTR) was initially introduced as a measure to stabilize the nation’s currency, the bolívar, amidst a challenging economic crisis intensified by U.S. sanctions. The token, purportedly backed by Venezuela’s substantial oil reserves, faced controversy even before its official launch. The opposition-controlled congress denounced it as illegal to leverage oil reserves for borrowing. That set the stage for ongoing disputes.
By 2019, Petro encountered international hurdles as <a href="https://news.todayq.com/u-s-authorities-are-keeping-a-keen-eye-on-crypto-taxes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">U.S. authorities</a> imposed sanctions on a Russian bank for financing the cryptocurrency. Despite its ambitious beginnings, the Petro struggled to gain widespread acceptance and faced skepticism on the global stage.
President Maduro uncovered the Petro in December 2017, presenting it as a strategic response to circumvent U.S. sanctions during a time of economic turmoil and devaluation of the bolivar. With a supposed backing of commodities, including the nation’s considerable oil reserves, the president envisioned issuing 100 million Petros valued at over a billion in 2018. It’s departure 
Venezuela wanted to connect the crypto with important services, like needing it for passports to support housing. Additionally, the minimum wage was pegged to Petro, with 50% of its value influencing the wage structure.
The authorities are now converting any remaining Petros to bolivars, as the reports suggest and the local currency is struggling with economic challenges. This, apparently, is the concluding chapter for Petro. The digital currency was spoiled by a corruption scandal that involved financial irregularities related to its use in oil operations. As a result of this controversy, Petroleum Minister Tareck El Aissami resigned.
