As the calendar approaches to mark the end of 2023, a unique investment trend is taking center stage. Data depicts that Crypto stocks linked to Bitcoin miners and <a href="https://news.todayq.com/crypto-shares-tumble-after-secs-ruling-on-coinbase-petition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto exchanges</a> are outshining the performance of the largest digital currency, Bitcoin (BTC).&nbsp; Crypto stocks gain on BTC surge 
According to reports, companies like Marathon Digital Holdings (NASDAQ: MARA) and Riot Platforms (NASDAQ: RIOT) recorded remarkable gains, exceeding 800% and 400%, respectively, in the current year. Similarly, US-based crypto exchange Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) and Bitcoin proxy MicroStrategy (NASDAQ: MSTR) have surged over 350% during the same period. while Bitcoin has seen a rise of approximately 160% in 2023.
This depicts that Bitcoin mining, an energy-intensive process crucial for validating transactions on the BTC blockchain, has become a focal point for investors. Firms who are involved in digital-asset mining, including Marathon and Riot Platforms are now expanding operations to increase Bitcoin production.This move comes in with an anticipation of a surge in demand if US regulators approve exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to hold the crypto directly.
The report mentioned that the strategic moves by mining companies have contributed to their stock surge. Riot Platforms disclosed massive purchases of mining machines, while Marathon, the largest miner by computing power, shifted its strategy by adding new facilities to enhance mining efficiency. This shift from an asset-light approach has gained investor attention and contributed to Marathon’s 11 consecutive trading session gains. Potential short squeeze? 
However, experts suggest that the mining stocks may face additional buying pressure and a potential short squeeze if the current rally persists. This might push prices even higher. Investors are closely keeping a check on Marathon Digital’s mining efficiency metrics following its acquisition of new sites.
On the other side of the market, crypto hedge funds are also witnessing a significant rebound after a challenging 2022. Leading funds, including Pantera Capital, have seen a remarkable turnaround in performance. Pantera Capital’s liquid-token fund, for instance, surged nearly 80% in 2023 after an 80% decline in the previous year. Other funds, such as Chainview Capital and Stoka Global LP, have also demonstrated substantial gains.
