However, it fails the scalability aspect as it can be slow and transaction costs can be high. Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin sees Layer 2 blockchains as the solution to this.</p><h2 id="header-2">How do Ethereum Layer 2s help to solve the trilemma?</h2><p>Essentially Layer 2 blockchains such as Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Metis, ZkSync Era, Linea and many more, are built on top of Ethereum. That means that they inherit the safety of Ethereum but with way lower gas fees and quicker transaction times – eg high scalability. And Ethereum-based Layer 2s use the same programming language which means that Ethereum apps can easily port on to Layer 2s.</p><p>Decentralization is still an issue but Layer 2s can implement this without compromising safety.</p><p>Although technically Layer 2s are being built on Bitcoin, Bitcoin lacks a lot of the tools that makes building a Layer 2 effective and usable, so for the foreseeable future, Ethereum-based Layer 2s will dominate the crypto market.</p><h2 id="header-3">Why is this bullish for Ethereum?</h2><p>All of these Layer 2s require the coin Ethereum to power them, although some may have their own token. So as each of these chains grow (and at the end of November the Total Value Locked in all these chains was over $6 billion), demand for ETH grows.
