In Texas, a dramatic shutdown of a 125MW Bitcoin mining facility by Whinstone Inc.'s armed security has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency world. The operation, owned by Rhodium Enterprises, was abruptly halted at its Rockdale site, with legal wrangling at the core. Riot Platforms, acquiring Whinstone in 2021, inherited these "legacy contracts," revealing a decrease in data center hosting revenue in their Q3 2023 report. The report also highlights Rhodium's assertion that Whinstone owes them millions from profits made by selling excess electricity to the ERCOT market. This is compounded by Whinstone's alleged refusal to share these profits, adding to Rhodium's grievances.
The situation mirrors a previous incident involving Whinstone and Japan's GMO. In March 2022, Whinstone removed GMO's mining machines, resulting in significant profit losses for GMO, which has since sought nearly $650 million in damages. This action, GMO alleges, breached their Texas Agreement, sparking another heated legal battle.
Fast forward to November 27, 2023, Whinstone's drastic step to terminate Rhodium's hosting agreements led to the contentious shutdown. Using private security, Whinstone cut power and ousted Rhodium's personnel, an unprecedented move without physical altercation. Rhodium's rapid legal response resulted in a temporary restraining order granted on November 29, setting up a pivotal hearing on December 5 to determine the ongoing access to Rhodium's facilities.
