South Korean multinational company Samsung recently filed for a trademark dubbed ‘Samsung Glasses’ in the United Kingdom. UploadVR, a media company, first reported the news. The organization filed the application in August, and got approval in November.&nbsp;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="strong-samsung-has-already-ventured-in-the-metaverse-strong">Samsung Has Already Ventured in The Metaverse</h2>
The trademark name and categories make it difficult to determine the kind of product Samsung might be looking forward to. The company chose augmented reality (AR) headsets, VR headsets, smart glasses, and more as product categories.
The JoongAng, a Korean newspaper, reported that the company has formed an ‘XR Alliance’ alongside tech companies Google and Qualcomm. It also mentioned that the Korean organization has commissioned 8K displays for their alleged extended reality (XR) headsets.
Extended reality is a catch-all phrase for VR, AR, and mixed reality (MR). All are considered important to access the metaverse. Companies like Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) and Apple are already working on head-mounted devices (HMDs). Apple’s Vision Pro was revealed during WorldWide Developers Conference 2023 (WWDC23) in June while Meta released their Quest 3 in October.
Samsung already has a virtual 837X store on the metaverse platform Decentraland. In May 2022, the company’s Vice Chairman Han Jong-Hee said “We will create Samsung’s version of the metaverse. Please come up with many ideas and help materialize them.”
The trademark could be related to it, however, no such confirmations have been provided. For many, the metaverse has already started to fade away. Meta Platforms’ rebranding gave the term considerable recognition in 2021. Last year, the company’s CEO told CNBC’s Jim Cramer that he envisions a billion people spending in the metaverse.
However, the company shifted to artificial intelligence (AI) after losing billions of dollars to the metaverse. Despite that, the company’s hope for virtual worlds appears tall. In an interview with American computer scientist Lex Fridman, he showcased the capabilities Meta Quest 3 possesses.
About <a href="https://www.thecoinrepublic.com/2022/12/26/samsung-planning-to-invest-in-latam-focused-metaverse-initiatives/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Samsung’s </a>metaverse strategies, the company’s CMO Michelle Crossan-Matos told technology news website ZDNET, “There’s a major thing that we’re doing differently: we’re on different platforms. This is a multiverse of metaverses strategy; Roblox, Fortnite, Decentraland (837X), and now Discord. I remember hearing about this multiverse idea at first and thinking what a tongue twister it was but also the sheer impact and reach that we were about to achieve.”
Many people believe the metaverse is already here. Nonetheless, users are required access to HMDs to truly experience the metaverse. According to data aggregator Statista, AR and VR units shipped worldwide fell from 9.06 Million units in 2021 to 8.33 Million in 2022. The figure is expected to decline further this year.
Experts speculate that HMDs will get smaller in size given the development of miniaturized components including microdisplays and batteries. Enabling technologies like XR to fit into spectacles-like frameworks.
