In a groundbreaking move, Nigerian startup Trojan Mining has initiated the construction of a hydro-powered bitcoin mining facility. This initiative, highlighted in a recent Forbes report by Abubakar Nur Khalil, marks a significant step for cryptocurrency mining in Africa, according to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2023/11/20/nigerian-bitcoin-miner-trojan-mining-launch-500kw-hydro-mining-site/?sh=798536b45e22" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">forbes</a>.
Trojan Mining showcased their locally-built mining container, designed specifically for a 500-kilowatt (KW) bitcoin mining site, over the past weekend. The container is equipped to house 150 application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) bitcoin mining units. This development is part of Trojan's ambitious plan to establish the leading bitcoin mining farm in Nigeria, as revealed by the company's CEO, Yassar Siyanbola.
The project is a testament to the increasing momentum of bitcoin mining in Africa, particularly in areas with limited power availability. Despite facing ambiguous regulatory frameworks, African <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/hut-8s-q2-2023-a-bitcoin-mining-marvel/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">crypto miners</a> are harnessing this innovative technology to provide affordable and consistent <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/crypto-mining-with-flare-gas-a-green-solution-or-environmental-setback/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">electricity</a> in rural zones.
In a significant boost to the initiative, Gridless, a Kenya-based bitcoin mining firm, secured $2 million in <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/liquidstack-secures-funding-to-boost-eco-friendly-bitcoin-mining-in-the-u-s/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">funding</a> from Jack Dorsey’s Block and Stillmark. Siyanbola acknowledges the guidance received from Marshall Long of Rhodium Enterprises and Gridless.
Starting with less than a dozen Innosilicon miners and a single <a href="https://ultramining.com/en/hardware/antminer-s9/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Antminer S9</a> unit, Trojan has grown its operation to a combined <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/impending-bitcoin-halving-may-trigger-major-hashrate-decline-say-experts/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">hashrate</a> of 296 terahash per second (TH/s) dedicated to the Bitcoin network. The company also plans to establish a 1-megawatt (MW) facility with partner support. In addition to mining, Trojan offers rig repair and setup services for bitcoin mining.
A major aspect of Trojan's strategy involves the creation of a mini-hydro plant within five years or less, aiming to make the farm entirely carbon-neutral and independent from Nigeria's power grid.
