In a webinar organized by the AI Safety Student Team and the Harvard Machine Learning Foundations Group, Bengio discussed the implications of AI’s rapid advancement, the importance of AI safety, and recommendations for a more secure AI landscape.</p>

Decisions about whether to release a system as open source involve considerations of balancing benefits and risks. Questions arise about who should make these decisions—corporations or governments? <p>Bengio concluded by emphasizing that governments must deepen their understanding of AI to effectively regulate its use and ensure democratic decision-making. To maintain control over AI and its implications, governments need to acquire the capability to comprehend, master, and even deploy AI for their defense. This knowledge empowers governments to make informed choices about AI utilization, ensuring alignment with societal values and democratic principles.</p>
