Political leaders of prominent countries are taking an interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and are also looking into its potential risks and threats. A recent summit organized in the United Kingdom came as an example of the efforts to recognize the issue, identify the threat, and make efforts to mitigate it.&nbsp;
The UK government organized an AI summit on Thursday, November 2, 2023, joined by governments and tech developers from across the globe. The summit was held at Bletchley Park, a place tied with WWII.&nbsp;
Leaders from the United States, China, the European Union, the United Nations, and delegates from 28 other nations joined in the conference. In addition, executives of leading U.S. AI companies including Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, etc. also participated in the conversation.&nbsp;
The summit marked the success with all the participants agreeing that developers of cutting-edge artificial intelligence models will need the conduction of rigorous testing. This step was said to be crucial for managing the risks involved with frontier AI. The declaration dubbed ‘Bletchley Declaration’ was signed by almost all the countries.&nbsp;
Apart from the host, U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, and Chinese Science and Tech Vice Minister Wu Zhaohui were likely to join the meet. In addition, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres were also expected at Bletchley Park.
Since the summit participants were from influential backgrounds, a groundbreaking outcome was expected. But the declaration is rather a softer approach towards taking controlled measures for AI. It also had no mention or proposal of AI regulation down the road.&nbsp;
However, all the political and AI tech leaders agreed on the common theme that companies need to make their frontier AI models go through rigorous assessments and tests. These tests should take place before the launch as well as after they are operational.&nbsp;

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister was making efforts to conduct the summit which resulted in the first international AI Safety Summit. A significant milestone where the leading AI authorities come together to emphasize the importance of comprehending the potential dangers of AI, to secure a prosperous future for our descendants and future generations was marked by the Summit.
U.S. Vice President Harris is scheduled to participate in the summit on Thursday, alongside government representatives from over 24 nations, including Canada, France, Germany, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and notably, China.
During her address at the U.S. Embassy, Harris emphasized the immediate need for global action to confront a comprehensive range of AI risks. She stressed the importance of addressing not only existential threats like extensive cyberattacks or AI-driven bioweapons but also the broader spectrum of AI-related challenges.
China’s Vice Minister of Science and Technology, Wu Zhaohui, expressed concerns regarding AI technology, characterizing it as “uncertain, unexplainable, and lacking transparency.” He highlighted the associated risks and challenges in areas such as ethics, safety, privacy, and fairness.&nbsp;
Open-source AI systems offer the advantage of enabling researchers and experts to promptly identify issues and rectify them. However, the drawback is that once such a system is made publicly available, it becomes susceptible to potential misuse for malicious intent.&nbsp;
As Bengio, also known as one of the “godfathers of AI”, noted during the meeting, there exists a conflict between the principles of open-source collaboration and the imperative for security. The question then arises of the approach to effectively manage this duality.
