Neal Stephenson’s Lamina1 has unveiled a <a href="https://www.nftgators.com/what-is-the-metaverse/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">metaverse</a> development infrastructure on Avalanche. The company aims to create an interoperable ecosystem of open metaverse tools and experiences by leveraging Avalanche’s tech stack and developer tools, focused on enabling blockchain networks for other companies in an open environment.
Lamina1 has launched a high-performance Layer 1 blockchain on the Avalanche chain, which it believes will form a crucial part of the infrastructure needed for the development of the open metaverse.
Although the term metaverse may not be the trendy buzzword it was a year ago, Neal Stephenson believes that lowering expectations will shift focus to real technology.
Speaking to <a href="https://venturebeat.com/metaverse/get-ready-for-neal-stephensons-open-metaverse-as-lamina1-unveils-avalanche-web3-plans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">GamesBeat</a> in an interview, Stephenson and Avalanche executive John Nahas said there is a need for an open metaverse, a term used to refer to a metaverse that is interoperable, decentralised and built on a highly scalable blockchain.
Lamina1 has chosen to use powerful technologies like Avalanche’s Web3 tech stack rather than building everything from the ground up.
The company was <a href="https://www.nftgators.com/the-inventor-of-the-word-metaverse-has-teamed-with-a-web3-expert-to-create-their-own/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">founded</a> by Stephenson, crypto pioneer Peter Vessenes, and immersive entertainment executive Rebecca Barkin with the goal of fostering an open, decentralized, and creator-friendly metaverse.
“We founded Lamina1 because we would like to see the Metaverse develop in a way that’s open, decentralized, and welcoming for creators,” said Stephenson. “In order to have a Metaverse that millions of people visit and use, we’ll need experiences there that people enjoy having. That starts with building creator support into the system from the ground up. We’ve found a partner that’s aligned with that vision and that has the engineering heft to realize it.”
Stephenson and Lamina1 believe that to bring the metaverse to the mainstream, it needs to offer enjoyable experiences to users and support creators from the ground up. The company has already made significant milestones with nearly 50,000 participants engaging in its Testnet and Betanet phases.
Rebecca Barkin, CEO of Lamina1 said in a statement: “Since day one, Peter, Neal, and I have had tremendous respect for Avalanche and the team at Ava Labs –– not just their core technology, but their business acumen, their focus on building long term value, and their first-class developer support, which is a critical aspect of onboarding new content creators and keeping them.”
Some of the features showcased during the unveiling include decentralized asset storage solutions, user-friendly world-builder tools, <a href="https://www.nftgators.com/what-is-a-blockchain-game/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">game</a> engine and web SDKs, consumer-grade user experience, and a simple world server for multiplayer experiences.
