This new partnership comes as <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/marathon-digital-to-boost-energy-efficiency-with-s19-xp-miners/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Marathon</a>'s second custodial venture, amplifying its treasury management strategy in an increasingly vulnerable digital landscape, according to <a href="https://www.coindesk.com/business/2023/10/18/bitcoin-miner-marathon-to-custody-some-of-its-btc-with-fidelity-digital/?utm_source=CryptoNews&amp;utm_medium=app" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">coindesk</a>.
Up until now, Marathon had placed all its <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/rising-mining-difficulty-squeezes-bitcoin-miners-sparks-accumulation-among-whales/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bitcoin holdings</a> with a single custodial service. This exclusive reliance posed a certain degree of risk, especially in a market that has witnessed multiple security breaches targeting custodial services. Fidelity Digital Asset will now share this responsibility, as Marathon opens one or more custodial asset accounts with the firm.
CFO Salman Khan emphasized the timeliness of this decision, noting, "We believe it is an opportune time to diversify our bitcoin custody across multiple custodians." As of September 30, Marathon had a whopping 13,726 bitcoin in its portfolio, and it continues to mine over 1,000 additional bitcoins each month. By adding Fidelity as a second custodian, the company aims to mitigate risks and enhance the security of its rapidly expanding assets.
The concept of custody is critical in the cryptocurrency market. Businesses often outsource the safekeeping of their digital assets like bitcoin to specialized third-party firms. Having more than one such custodian provides an additional layer of safety, ensuring that if one platform is compromised, not all assets would be at risk.&nbsp;
This move comes on the heels of recent attacks on various custodians, including Fortress Trust, whose breach led them to attempt a sale to blockchain tech company Ripple—a deal that ultimately disintegrated. Marathon's choice to diversify could very well be a cautionary step to avoid finding itself in a similar predicament.
The announcement had an immediate impact on Marathon's stock, which saw a 1.3% increase in post-market trading. This caps off an already impressive year for the company, whose stock has risen by 116%, outpacing bitcoin's own ascent of 71%.
