Pennsylvania lawmakers have had a change of heart. A proposed two-year ban on cryptocurrency mining has been removed from the state's Cryptocurrency Energy Conservation Act. The change happened on October 16, as the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee narrowly passed the bill with 13 votes for and 12 against, according to <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/pennsylvania-bill-scraps-crypto-mining-ban">cointelegraph</a>. 
The bill's sponsor, Democratic Representative Greg Vitali, admitted to facing pressure from trade labor unions and Democratic Party leaders. According to Vitali, these unions hold significant sway over House Democrats. As a result, Vitali believes compromising on the ban was necessary to keep the Democratic majority in Pennsylvania's House. 
The modified bill now focuses on an impact study and new reporting requirements for <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/hut-8s-q2-2023-a-bitcoin-mining-marvel/">crypto miners</a>. Within six months, miners must report information including the number of mining sites, their sizes, and details on energy sources and emissions. This information will be required annually, and new miners must submit it before beginning operations in Pennsylvania. 
This legislative shuffle has broader implications. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/stronghold-digital-mining-hits-3-0-eh-s-hash-rate-milestone/">Stronghold</a> Digital Mining, a crypto mining company, recently set up shop in Pennsylvania. The state is the third-largest coal-producing state in the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/major-bitcoin-mining-pool-foundry-usa-to-introduce-fee-structure/">US</a>. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/stronghold-digital-mining-hits-3-0-eh-s-hash-rate-milestone/">Stronghold</a> bought two coal-burning power plants to convert waste into energy for Bitcoin mining rigs. Another company, <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/terawulfs-game-changing-move-75m-investment-in-next-gen-bitcoin-miners/">TeraWulf</a>, operates a nuclear-powered mining site in the state. 
Previously, Stronghold sought approval to burn shredded tires for energy, sparking strong opposition from environmental groups. Now, with the ban removed, the crypto mining landscape in Pennsylvania seems to be getting more complex and competitive, as companies vie for environmentally efficient ways to mine Bitcoin. 
All in all, the removal of the two-year crypto mining ban opens new debates and opportunities. While it allows for potential growth in Pennsylvania's crypto mining sector, it also challenges lawmakers and environmentalists to balance economic development with ecological concerns.
