Nano Nuclear Energy is setting ambitious goals for the next decade. In a recent interview, CEO James Walker announced that the company aims to be the first to commercialize microreactors by 2030. This adaptability has caught the attention of tech giants like Microsoft, which is considering using microreactors to power its <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/crypto-miners-shift-gears-ai-is-the-new-gold-rush/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">data centers</a>.
The company is developing two types of microreactors: Zeus, a solid-core battery reactor, and Odin, which uses low-pressure coolant and enriched uranium dioxide fuel. According to Walker, Nano Nuclear is "neck and neck" with competitors like Westinghouse and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the microreactor space.
However, the road to commercialization is fraught with challenges. Regulatory hurdles are a significant concern, especially in the United States where the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has been criticized for slowing down the development of advanced nuclear technologies. Despite this, Walker remains optimistic, stating that entering the less developed microreactor market is "far easier" than breaking into the small modular reactor (SMR) market.
Climate change concerns are driving interest in alternative energy sources, including microreactors. While some experts argue that renewable energy sources like wind and solar are sufficient, Walker counters that these technologies have reached their efficiency limits. In contrast, he sees "blue sky potential" for cost reductions and technological advancements in microreactors.
Another challenge is fuel supply. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/russia-s-energy-ministry-charges-forward-to-legalize-crypto-mining/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Russia</a> currently dominates the market for high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU), which is essential for most small advanced reactors. To mitigate this, Nano Nuclear is a founding participant in a HALEU consortium aimed at developing domestic fuel sources.
