A new report by <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/marathon-digital-povyshaet-energoeffektivnost-s-pomoshhyu-majnerov-s19-xp/">Marathon Digital Holdings</a> and Bitcoin Magazine Pro suggests a groundbreaking solution: integrating Bitcoin mining with landfill management to mitigate methane emissions. 
The report argues that Bitcoin mining could offer a market-based approach to reducing methane emissions from landfills. This is because Bitcoin mining can convert otherwise wasted methane into economic value. It requires minimal infrastructure investment and is scalable, making it a viable option for landfills of all sizes and locations. The process involves capturing methane from landfill waste to power generators or microturbines, which then supply <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/crypto-mining-with-flare-gas-a-green-solution-or-environmental-setback/">electricity</a> to Bitcoin mining rigs.

The report also highlights that this solution is particularly beneficial for smaller or isolated landfills that find existing waste-to-energy solutions economically unfeasible. 
Every year, over 2.0 billion metric tons of waste end up in landfills worldwide, contributing to 11% of all global methane emissions. The situation is even more alarming in the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/pennsylvania-a-new-hub-for-cryptomining-ignites-environmental-concerns/">United States</a>, where municipal solid waste landfills contribute to about 14% of human-related methane emissions.
