Meta has not given up on the metaverse yet. Earlier in the year, the company appeared to shift focus to artificial intelligence leading some to believe that it had ‘found a new toy’. However, Zuckerberg insisted that its focus on AI is part and parcel of its metaverse strategy. 
On Wednesday, the Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) CEO during the Meta Connect conference showcased a technology stack comprised of new artificial intelligence tools, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and celebrity-endorsed digital assistants, which he hopes will jump-start his company’s metaverse campaign. 
The new AI tools will be powered by Meta’s <a href="https://ai.meta.com/research/publications/emu-enhancing-image-generation-models-using-photogenic-needles-in-a-haystack/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Emu computer vision model</a>, which uses photogenic needles to generate a wide range of visual concepts from text. 
This unveiling follows Meta’s recent rollout of Horizon Worlds to mobile and web platforms, allowing users to experience <a href="https://www.nftgators.com/what-is-the-metaverse/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">the metaverse</a> without a VR headset. The text-to-image models allow WhatsApp and Messenger users to share digital stickers that can be automatically created via written prompts.&nbsp; 
This follows the growing popularity of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and <a href="https://www.nftgators.com/googles-bard-web3-has-the-potential-to-make-the-internet-a-more-open-fair-and-accessible-place-for-everyone/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Google Bard</a>, which metaverse companies are leveraging to expedite 3D content generation. 
For example, users can write “pizza playing basketball”, which subsequently generates a digital sticker of an animated pizza slice holding a basketball.&nbsp; 
The new range of AI tools will debut on Instagram in October, allowing users to alter their photos and pictures with written prompts within five seconds. 
“My kids tell me it’s still not fast enough, but five seconds gets to a point where you’re really cooking,” Zuckerberg said. 
The company’s long-term vision is to get users to automatically generate realistic visuals within Meta’s chat tools, in a similar way to Discord’s Midjourney AI app. 
The company also rolled out an AI digital assistant that works like ChatGPT. The Meta AI digital assistant leverages Microsoft Bing to generate responses to prompts that require real-time information. 
The company has teamed up with renowned celebrities including Paris Hilton, Mr. Beast and Kendall Jenner to represent digital characters. 
Zuckerberg used the latest version of Ray-Ban smart glasses developed with EssilorLuxottica to illustrate how the company is using AI to build the foundation for the metaverse. The $ 299-a-pair glasses will be available for purchase from October 17 and come embedded with Meta’s AI software, allowing people to identify landmarks or translate signs when looking at various objects. 
“Before this last year of AI breakthroughs, I kind of thought that smart glasses were only really going to become ubiquitous once we really dialled in, you know, the holograms and the displays and all of that stuff, which we’re making progress on,” Zuckerberg <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2023/09/27/meta-ceo-zuckerberg-looks-to-digital-assistants-ai-to-push-metaverse.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">said</a>.
