Crypto mining is booming in <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/texas-residents-challenge-bitcoin-mining-industrys-impact-on-power-grid-and-communities/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Texas</a>, making the state a significant player in Bitcoin mining. Almost 40% of Bitcoin mining now occurs in the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/senator-lummis-pushes-for-crypto-regulation-amid-sec-lawsuits/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">U.S.</a>, with a large share in <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/texas-residents-challenge-bitcoin-mining-industrys-impact-on-power-grid-and-communities/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Texas</a>. Despite the growth, Earthjustice and other advocates are sounding the alarm on its impact on the state's power grid, according to <a href="https://www.fox7austin.com/news/cryptocurrency-texas-power-grid-ercot-crypto-mining" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">fox7austin</a>. 
According to Mandy Deroche of Earthjustice, crypto mining puts a strain on energy grids and contributes to various forms of pollution. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/upcoming-bitcoin-halving-threatens-mining-profitability-analysts-warn/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Electricity prices</a> are on the rise, affecting Texas ratepayers. Critics argue that the crypto industry, unlike traditional manufacturing, only consumes energy without giving back to the community. Public Citizen's Adrian Shelley calls for state intervention to prevent the crypto industry from "holding our grid hostage." 
On the flip side, the industry defends its role in energy consumption. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/riot-platforms-to-boost-efficiency-with-midas-immersion-coolings/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Riot</a> Platforms, the largest crypto mining facility in the <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/senator-lummis-pushes-for-crypto-regulation-amid-sec-lawsuits/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">U.S.</a> located in Texas, received over $30 million in energy credits from ERCOT. The company states that these programs aim to stabilize the grid, not subsidize the industry. 
Adam Swick from <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/marathon-digital-povyshaet-energoeffektivnost-s-pomoshhyu-majnerov-s19-xp/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Marathon Digital Holdings</a> offers another perspective. According to him, Bitcoin mining can be a tool for grid balance. It can absorb excess energy and return it when the grid is strained. He also mentions that crypto mining facilities have the advantage of going offline quickly, unlike nuclear or large manufacturing plants. 
Jackie Sawicky of the Texas Coalition Against Cryptomining offers a counterargument. She questions the legitimacy of such high-demand days, blaming them on the crypto <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/texas-residents-challenge-bitcoin-mining-industrys-impact-on-power-grid-and-communities/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">mining industry</a>. 
In the midst of this debate, ERCOT is considering new regulations for the industry. As crypto mining continues to expand, the question remains: Is it a burden or a boon for Texas's power grid? With contrasting views and high stakes, the future of crypto mining in Texas hangs in the balance.
