In an ambitious move, Bhutan has teamed up with <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitdeer-pioneers-crypto-mining-expansion-with-norway-and-bhutan-data-centers/">Bitdeer</a> Technologies Group to launch a 600-megawatt cryptocurrency mining farm. Announced last Thursday, the project aims to propel Bhutan's economy into the digital age. <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitdeer-pioneers-crypto-mining-expansion-with-norway-and-bhutan-data-centers/">Bitdeer</a> is set to raise $500 million from international investors for this venture, and reports indicate fundraising is already in full swing, according to <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/report-bhutan-commences-plan-to-develop-600-megawatt-bitcoin-mining-farm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">bitcoin.com</a>. 
Ujjwal Deep Dahal, the CEO of Druk Holding and Investments (DHI), touted Bhutan as an ideal spot for Bitcoin mining. Despite the country's geographical and connectivity challenges, its access to green energy and lower power costs make it an attractive investment hub. According to Dahal, the initiative could transform the regional economy into a more sustainable and interconnected system. 
Local engagement is also on the project's agenda. Dahal underlined that the mining farm will deepen Bhutanese citizens' understanding of and participation in the cryptocurrency sector. As a result, they can engage in the global economy without leaving their homeland. 
Bhutan's economy, currently reeling from the impacts of COVID-19 and foreign exchange struggles, stands to gain significantly from this partnership. The first phase, utilizing 100 megawatts, will commence operations this month. Over the next three years, capacity is expected to ramp up to the full 600 megawatts. 
Taking a responsible approach, both Bitdeer and DHI have committed to prioritizing domestic energy needs. During winter months, when power generation dips, crypto mining operations will halt temporarily. This decision underscores the project's commitment to balancing economic aspirations with the well-being of Bhutan's citizens and resources. 
In summary, the collaboration between Bhutan and Bitdeer Technologies sets the stage for a potentially groundbreaking integration of traditional and digital economies.
