As an internet user, the concept of data breaches is probably familiar to you, even if you haven’t been a victim of this harrowing attack. In spite of the top technology presented to us every day, securing our private data has been a struggle for years now, especially due to the centralized nature of most systems which store our personal information.
And because of the weak security measures some centralized systems employ, every minute of every day we are at risk of having our sensitive, private details exposed to potentially harmful individuals online.
Given these factors, it’s only natural for us to begin considering different alternatives for storing and managing our private information in the digital landscape, such as <a href="https://selfkey.org/self-sovereign-identity-ssid/?utm_source=guest_post&amp;utm_medium=textClick&amp;utm_campaign=CMC&amp;utm_id=CMC_guest_post" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">self-sovereign identity</a>.
Self-sovereign identity (SSID) is a decentralized model of digital identity where individuals may have full ownership, control, and portability of their personal data.
Instead of relying on centralized entities or third parties, such as banks, corporations, or government agencies, to validate or store their identity, individuals use blockchain and cryptographic tools to assert, authenticate, and prove their identity claims.
Let’s examine a few ways in which SSID may enhance our digital security.
🔐 Decentralization
SSIDs are based on decentralized systems, like blockchains, meaning that there's no single point of failure. By distributing the identity data across multiple nodes, cyberattacks may become significantly more challenging, which may make decentralized systems less attractive to potential hackers.
🔐 Data Ownership
With SSID, individuals may have full control over their data, deciding whom to share it with and for how long. This may limit exposure and reduce the risk of massive data breaches, since data isn't stored in large centralized repositories.
🔐 Fine-Grained Consent
Theoretically speaking, SSID allows users to provide selective disclosure of their private information when engaging with others online. This means that, instead of sharing the entire identity, users can disclose only the pieces of information that are necessary, minimizing the exposure of personal data.
🔐 Cryptographic Security
SSID uses cryptographic principles to secure data. Public and private key pairs may ensure that only the rightful owner can make identity claims.
🔐 Reduced Attack Chances
Since SSIDs don't store personal data in massive centralized databases, they may be less attractive to cybercriminals. If an attacker compromises one person's SSID, it doesn't grant access to information about thousands or millions of others.
Overall, what SSID aims to achieve is to empower individuals with control over their personal data by leveraging the strengths of decentralized and cryptographic systems. And this may represent a significant step forward in enhancing digital security.
