<h2 id="header-0">Quick Look at Qtum</h2>Qtum is a smart contract blockchain platform that uses Proof-of-Stake to achieve consensus.Qtum’s blockchain layer is based on Bitcoin’s UTXO model. This is primarily for security and upstream development reasons.The UTXO model is battle-tested, being in the public domain since 2009.The Bitcoin Core team constantly works to improve the software through various releases and Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, which can then be merged into Qtum Core.The smart contract layer is Qtum’s Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) implementation.The team accomplished it using an interpretation layer called the Account Abstraction Layer. Originally designed for Peercoin by Sunny King (PoSv1) and altered by the Blackcoin team (PoSv2).Qtum has developed on this codebase since 2017 and has not had any issues. We call this Proof-of-Stake version 3.Staking your tokens allows you to be selected by the network to validate transactions on the Qtum blockchain.It’s a straightforward design that keeps things decentralized and prevents a lot of energy usage compared to traditional Proof-of-Work designs.PoSv3 has added these functionalities:Protection against “Short-Range Attacks”A short-range attack is where a user could farm the work of an alternative staking blockchain and try to submit that work to the Qtum network as valid work to trick the chain into getting free rewards.Protection against “Timewarp” attacksThis modification removes the time and date from the input and references its depth in the blockchain to determine its age.This simple trick is aimed at preventing Timewarp attacks, where a malicious user fakes the date stamp to the blockchain to adjust the staking difficulty in their favor or attack the chain.Other Notable ImprovementsExtra confirmations are required for Qtum rewards to be spendable. This was increased to 500 from 120.This makes it much harder for an attacker to try and fork the chain and “double-spend” tokens.Removal of Coin Age from PoSv1This is an inherited feature from PoSv2 that’s important.
