As the digital world hurtles towards a future defined by blockchain technology, gaming giant Ubisoft makes its first foray into this frontier. With its upcoming experimental tactical RPG game, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles, Ubisoft is poised to delve into the world of blockchain gaming. While the company is a relative newcomer in this sphere, web3 gaming has been thriving for some time, with pioneers like Undeads Metaverse leading the charge.
Ubisoft's new game looks to make a bold statement in the Web3 landscape and has set the trend for other AAA studios to follow suit – such as Square Enix and Sega. Powered by the Oasys blockchain, Champions Tactics boasts that it will leverage this technology to offer some form of ownership of in-game assets. The biggest fear however is a potential death by committee, as seen in the rapid decline of many of their past IPs, as well as their inexperience in the sector. How will this affect their ability to deliver in an ever-changing web3 universe? While other web3 native teams know this, are experienced and are a lot more flexible than Ubisoft.

A project that sets the bar of excellence extremely high, players have responded by building a thriving community of active participants. The game sold out its first #NFT minting and set a floor price that held above 500% of the initial mint price for several weeks after the mint. In addition, the fact that it held an active community during a very unknown time for the DeFI market is testament to Undeads Metaverse unique position and popularity. The development of an NFT game that keeps players constantly engaged as it evolves solves the age-old developer problem of how to keep players engaged with the brand while the lengthy production of a high-budget title is underway. In the case of Undeads Metaverse, the NFT-based game uses its unique combination of engaging gameplay and the decentralized transparency of blockchain to transcend itself far beyond a crypto afterthought, into a genuinely rewarding and exciting experience. One that will ensure others have to work hard to match its quality - even top titles from A-list studios.
But What Exactly is Undeads Metaverse? And what lessons can the likes of Ubisoft and other heavyweights learn from its success?
The Undeads Metaverse is an immersive, isometric #MMORPG which allows players to leverage a broad range of income-generating mechanics to earn crypto while engaging with a fascinating and rich post-apocalyptic metaverse. NFT/digital asset ownership has also been designed into the game economy itself from the ground up - as well as being fully supported and verified by Machinations, – a well-known and reputable economy design experts for Web3 games. This represents another issue for traditional game developers, in that blockchain games require a very different creation process and as such traditional publishers cannot rely on their regular game design teams to have the required knowledge to build them. This could lead to quality issues as they outsource to third-party teams who don’t have experience with the studio or their creation process and ethos.
For Undeads #Metaverse itself, the game's survival experience pits two factions – Zombies and Humans – against each other in resource-oriented conflicts. Players (Undeadians) explore territories, fortify settlements, gather resources, enhance equipment, trade, master professions, and cultivate their unique NFT characters. Previously there have been numerous projects that simply randomize statistics. Conversely to this lazy approach, the Undeads team have painstakingly designed the NFT statistics to benefit holders in balanced ways - so not to make a pay-to-win game. This is contrary to the ethics of many large publishers, who have a history of leveraging extra funds from players through slot-machine tactics such as loot boxes – a sneaky tactic that they should – but likely won’t – leave behind when entering the web3 space.
Overall, Undeads Metaverse provides a highly engaging, intricate and immersive world for players to explore, interact, strategize, and conquer. With its wide array of characters, vehicles, land types, and buildings, it stands as a testament to the potential of blockchain gaming and NFTs in crafting rich and layered gaming experiences – one that companies such as Ubisoft will have to look to emulate by taking a page from their playbook, if they are to be successful.

A Milestone Shift.

Regardless of how late they are to the proverbial game, seeing traditional gaming publisher Ubisoft (and other AAA companies like it) embrace blockchain and Web3 technologies is actually a great thing for all and testament to the transformative potential such technologies can create. However, the ultimate success of this transition for the studios themselves ultimately depends on the ability to create games that players actually want to play. In this sense pioneers like #Undeads can act as a signpost to those that come afterwards, exemplifying the quality that can be produced in the GameFi sector when companies take things seriously and provide value to players.
If Ubisoft’s game – and others that follow – are handled well, the sector is primed to see an explosion of interest over the coming years, creating unprecedented opportunities for evolution for both players and developers. This in turn will provide a gateway of mass adoption into the blockchain industry, something that advocates and enthusiasts have wanted to see for some time.
And if it doesn’t work out well…at least we'll always have Undeads
