New data reveals that <a href="https://ultramining.com/news/en/bitcoin-miners-move-over-1b-to-exchanges-a-sign-of-strategy-shift/">Bitcoin mining</a> leads in sustainable energy use. Between July 2019 and June 2023, it showed the most significant increase in its sustainable energy mix, according to <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/bitcoin-mining-the-highest-user-of-sustainable-energy-new-data-reveals/">bitcoin.com</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
The data places Bitcoin mining as the primary user of sustainable energy, with 52.6% usage. Interestingly, the banking sector follows with a 39.2% usage, while the gold industry stands at 12.8%. 
This data is from the Bitcoin Energy and Emissions Sustainability Tracker (BEEST) model. It indicates a remarkable 38% increase in Bitcoin mining's sustainable energy mix over the specified period, a figure unmatched by any other global industry. 
Furthermore, Bitcoin mining's emission intensity saw a significant drop from over 500 g/kWh in July 2021 to 296 g/kWh by June 2023. In contrast, the banking sector witnessed a mere 3.3% decline. 
Daniel Batten, a climate tech investor and ESG analyst, argues that Bitcoin has a vital role in combating climate change and promoting financial sovereignty. Batten believes that Bitcoin is an important technology, instrumental in mitigating runaway methane emissions and facilitating the transition to renewable energy sources. 
Despite past criticisms of Bitcoin mining's high electricity use, the industry seems to be making concerted efforts towards environmental sustainability. As the data shows, the commitment to reducing emissions and increasing the use of sustainable energy is yielding notable results.
