Cryptopia

In a small village in the Netherlands, Hansco Leek’s journey began, shaped by a unique educational experience and a burning desire to create something of his own. He attended a special school that prioritized personalized learning, allowing him to focus on his strengths before tackling his weaknesses. From an early age, he harbored ambitions of becoming an entrepreneur, seizing every opportunity that came his way.

Humble Beginnings

Hans always had a desire to become an entrepreneur, "I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, I started by delivering papers, washing cars, and selling baked goods for the neighborhood." Demonstrating his drive and ambition, he revealed, "I also had my own catering business while I was a student."

However, it wasn't long before he realized that this path wasn't leading him in the desired direction. Recounting his pivotal moment of clarity, Hans admitted, "But I soon realized that was not the right way for me to go." Undeterred by this realization, he decided to embark on a new venture alongside his brother. "So I started a company with my brother, making software for second-hand car companies," he disclosed.

Their entrepreneurial journey began from scratch, but their determination knew no bounds. Describing their unwavering commitment, he emphasized, "We started from zero, but we never stopped." Through sheer perseverance, they managed to build an extensive client list, growing their database exponentially. "We built up a client list from 0 to 2,000—a huge database with cars and connected products like insurance," he proudly revealed.

The road to success wasn't without its challenges. Remarkably, their main competitor chose to overlook their presence for a staggering 10 years. However, as their company flourished and clients flocked to their superior offerings, the inevitable occurred. "Our competitor, who ignored us for the first 10 years, had to buy us out because all the clients were walking away from them to us," Hans recalled.

As Hans reflected on the tremendous growth and triumphs of his business, a new spark ignited within him—an interest that would ultimately lead him to explore the realm of cryptocurrencies.

The Journey into Crypto

Amidst the growing fascination surrounding cryptocurrencies, Hans shared, "I got into crypto around 2016", indicating the early stage at which he recognized its potential. Driven by a compelling vision of the future, he researched extensively, becoming captivated by the possibilities that lay ahead. "This is it. This will be the future," he proclaimed, firm in his belief.

With unwavering conviction, he made a bold move, allocating a significant portion of his savings toward cryptocurrencies. "So I put a lot of my savings into crypto," highlighting his commitment to embracing this emerging asset class. Diversification became a key strategy, as he invested in a multitude of different coins, trusting in the potential of various projects. Hans acknowledged the reliance on others' expertise while choosing projects, learning valuable lessons along the way. Reflecting on the outcome, he affirmed, "So overall, it was a very good decision to step into crypto." This enthusiasm even extended to his mother, whom he enlightened about cryptocurrencies, leading her to surpass financial expectations. "She makes a lot of money, more than she needs. She even gives to charity and the church," he proudly shared, showcasing the positive impact of crypto in their lives.

View on Traditional Finance

Hans passionately shared his perspective on the transformative potential of cryptocurrencies. Shedding light on the inadequacies of the existing financial system, he exclaimed, "How things are done in the world, in the old financial system, it's just not OK." Expressing concern over the concentration of power in the hands of a select few entities such as central banks and massive governments, he eagerly championed crypto's ability to restore power to the people. "I see crypto giving power back to the people. I see it as giving people opportunities".

Drawing attention to a startling statistic, he revealed, "Did you know there are 1.2 billion people in the world who don't have bank accounts?" Sharing a compelling story, he recounted how his friends in the Philippines, facing the same issue, found a solution through cryptocurrencies. "They opened an account in coins.ph instead”, emphasizing the power of blockchain technology in facilitating global transactions and essential bill payments.

In the face of an exclusionary financial system that marginalizes vast segments of the population, Hans’ unwavering belief in the liberating potential of cryptocurrencies shines brightly, witnessing firsthand the transformative impact on individuals and communities.

This drive led him to venture into the realm of virtual economies, co-founding Cryptopia, an innovative blockchain-based game that seamlessly merges gaming and cryptocurrency to revolutionize the Web3 gaming industry.

Exploring Cryptopia with the Co-Founder

Hans acknowledges that the game is “huge” and difficult to describe the game in a nutshell. He emphasized the ability to verify every transaction on the blockchain, ensuring honesty among players. He stated, "Cryptopia is an honest game. On the blockchain, you can verify every transaction; that way, it keeps people honest."

Uniqueness of Cryptopia

Cryptopia embraces the concept of freedom. We operate on a free-to-play and, importantly, free-to-earn model. Whether you join early or late, our game ensures consistent earning opportunities. Accessibility remains a priority, even for individuals in areas with lower income levels. By eliminating the need for upfront investment, we allow gamers to simply download the game and start playing.

Cryptopia's serverless architecture is another noteworthy feature, distinguishing it from traditional games. Expressing concerns about games dependent on central servers that can be switched off, Hans proudly declared, "Our game, Cryptopia, is serverless." This design guarantees the game's continuity and eliminates the risk of its disappearance due to server shutdowns.

Hans highlights, "Another important aspect of Cryptopia is its non-custodial wallet, which features multisig and multifactor authentication. The game seamlessly integrates the wallet, enabling players to use it without ever needing to leave the game, as it is automatically generated during the game account setup. The wallet is highly user-friendly and secure, providing numerous opportunities for users." Additionally, the game incorporates its own marketplace, eliminating reliance on external platforms and providing a seamless user experience.

Stressing the significance of starting, he acknowledged the inherent challenges of onboarding into something entirely new. He offered valuable advice, stating, "My advice is just to start. We have an amazing community of people who are very willing to help new players to make the most out of Cryptopia."

In connection with that, Cryptopia sets itself apart through its sustainability and inclusive approach. Rather than focusing solely on early adopters, the game ensures ongoing benefits for new players. He emphasized this commitment, stating, "We have designed the game in a way that ensures new players can always benefit, and not just the early adopters." This inclusive model fosters long-term engagement, with mechanics in place incentivizing new players to join.

Early Access Benefits

Moreover, Hans unveiled a host of additional benefits that await players who join early access for Cryptopia. “For example, we have early access to ships. And Cryptopia will launch in phases." During the beta phase, players with early access gain a significant advantage by allowing them to collect resources and store them in their Early Access Ship. The crucial aspect is that these resources are carried over when Cryptopia officially launches on the mainnet, providing early adopters with a substantial edge. Resources are found in the tiles. To extract these resources, such as gold, players must construct facilities on the tiles. These facilities can be built by players who possess resources carried over from their early access period. Hans further emphasized the advantage of early participation, explaining, "In the beginning, gold will be easy to acquire from the tiles when there are fewer players. But as the supply becomes scarce and the demand for it rises, players who started early gain an advantage with their accumulated gold resources."

Rewarding Players for their Time and Effort

Addressing concerns about the potential expenses associated with living in Cryptopia, Hans offered a different perspective, stating, "I would say I don't think it's a good word, 'expensive'." He said that there are many ways to acquire in-game assets—Early Access Ships, Land Tiles, and Loyalty Cards. He noted that these assets can be used to enhance gameplay and gain a competitive advantage. By actively engaging in gameplay and dedicating time to earning within Cryptopia, players can pave the way for their success, ultimately reaping the rewards of their efforts.

Future Plans

Cryptopia's future plans extend beyond its game, aiming to collaborate and support other blockchain games. The co-founder emphasizes, "Cryptopia can be useful to other blockchain games." We will be offering the multisig wallet to developers struggling to build their own, simplifying integration and overcoming challenges associated with creating a multisig wallet from scratch.

Furthermore, Cryptopia intends to open its marketplace to other games, granting developers without their own infrastructure, access to a seamless transaction platform. Hans highlights the advantage, stating, "Similarly, if they lack their own marketplace, they can make use of Cryptopia's marketplace." This ensures a smooth user experience for game developers and their players.

Faction of Choice

When asked about his faction preference in Cryptopia, Hans expressed his inclination towards the Industrialist faction. Reflecting on their vision, he stated, "I'm an industrialist. I always wanted to build Cryptopia." He emphasized the significance of active participation and job creation within the game, highlighting the importance of collaboration among Cryptopians.

Learnings

Regarding the takeaways from Cryptopia, Hans underscores the significance of decentralization and its role in fostering equality. He asserts, "We can learn the value of decentralization, leveling the playing field for all." In a world where power is concentrated and corruption and surveillance prevail, Hans advocates for empowering individuals with equal opportunities and the ability to influence policies that shape their lives. Envisioning a future where blockchain technology becomes more prevalent, he envisions, “In the near future, as blockchain becomes more common, it will be easier to accomplish tasks without corruption, giving power to the people.” — Ultimately empowering the people and placing power in their hands.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Hans’ journey from humble beginnings to co-founding Cryptopia, the blockchain-based metaverse game, is a testament to the power of determination and unwavering belief in the potential of cryptocurrencies. Through his experiences as an entrepreneur and investor, he recognized the flaws in the traditional financial system and became an advocate for the transformative power of blockchain technology. He seeks to enable financial inclusion, empower individuals, democratize opportunities, and facilitate the onboarding of people into decentralized financial systems. Through initiatives like Cryptopia, he aims to create a more equitable and inclusive future, where financial freedom is within reach for all.
