As we celebrate <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/gay-rights/pride-month" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Pride Month</a> this June, it is important to look at how Web3 is helping create a better world that promotes <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/mckinsey-explainers/what-is-diversity-equity-and-inclusion" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">diversity, equity, and inclusion</a> (DEI).While DEI is usually discussed in the context of values promoted in the workplace, the creation of a more inclusive space, online and offline, has a profound effect on society as a whole.“For LGBTQ&#43; employees, many workplaces today fall short of full inclusion, even if there is visible corporate support for LGBTQ&#43; communities. For example, LGBTQ&#43; women are more underrepresented than women generally in America’s largest corporations. Just four LGBTQ&#43; CEOs head these corporations—only one woman, and none identifies as transgender. An episode of the McKinsey Talks Talent podcast considers the latest research on the LGBTQ&#43; experience in the workplace and highlights practical steps for all employees to signal support and boost progress for this community.“Transgender employees face a unique set of challenges. They earn 32 percent less money than cisgender employees (cisgender refers to people whose gender identity aligns with the sex assigned to them at birth). More than half of transgender employees say they are not comfortable at work, and they report feeling less supported by managers. These strong feelings of exclusion have significant economic implications: greater transgender inclusion in the workforce through wage equity and increased employment could boost annual consumer spending by $12 billion a year. Web3 has the potential to break this cycle, by enabling brands to create genuinely meaningful marketing and experiences for the queer community. It all starts with authentic community engagement.”“Web3 is in large part about community-building, which makes it an opportunity for brands to explore new modes of engagement with their queer audiences. They can fuse insights and integration to unleash vibrant digital content and experiential activations.”For example, last year, <a href="https://www.sandbox.game/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">The Sandbox</a> was the venue for the very first metaverse-native LGBTQ&#43; pride parade – an event organized by <a href="https://www.peopleofcrypto.io/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">People of Crypto (POC) Lab</a>.The sad reality is that many countries still have laws <a href="https://www.humandignitytrust.org/lgbt-the-law/map-of-criminalisation/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">criminalizing same-sex relations</a>. Through the virtual pride parade, individuals from countries where Pride Month marches are banned can participate and connect with their fellow members of the LGBTQ&#43; community.POC Lab, an innovation hub focused on building diversity in Web3 spaces, was co-founded by Simone Berry and Akbar Hamid — <a href="https://digiday.com/marketing/how-the-sandboxs-first-virtual-pride-parade-highlights-the-importance-of-diversity-in-the-metaverse/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">a Black woman and a gay Muslim man</a>, respectively.“The centerpiece of the Pride space is a massive, rainbow-striped statue in the shape of a raised fist, which Hamid said will eventually be turned into a cross-platform NFT. POC Lab is also selling NFT avatars showcasing diverse perspectives, including avatars in hijabs and wheelchairs. The company also hopes to partner with LGBTQ advocacy organizations such as GLAAD and equity groups focused on the Black community such as 15 Percent Pledge for the event. ‘Of course, there’s the give-back component,’ Hamid said. ‘We’re going to be writing charities into all of our smart contracts as well.’“If companies like POC Lab and The Sandbox want the diversity of their virtual spaces to match the demographics of the physical world, events like Metaverse Pride are much needed. At the moment, there is a healthy amount of skepticism about the metaverse among marginalized communities, particularly within the LGBTQ community, whose members already feel unprotected in Web2 spaces such as social media. The skepticism is fair: both Berry and Hamid were able to provide a laundry list of Web3 projects that ranged from the misguided to the blatantly racist.”Meanwhile, <a href="https://decentraland.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Decentraland</a> also held its <a href="https://cointelegraph.com/news/pride-in-the-metaverse-blockchain-tech-creates-new-opportunities-for-lgbtq-people" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">month-long Pride event</a> last year.“Challenges aside, Web3 as a whole is allowing Pride Month to extend far beyond what has previously been possible. Shedding light on this, Dias commented that compared with real-life Pride events, the Metaverse enables people around the world – even in dangerous places – to participate.
