On the surface, it appears that the benefits of participating in this experiment is purely economic. It is not. While Cryptopia aims to level the economic playing field, the main goal is to call attention to the need for a societal reboot. Cryptopia leads the way by example to an independent city-state that prioritizes the future of its citizens through secure and transparent governance.<h3 id="strong-where-is-cryptopia-strong">Where is Cryptopia?</h3>Virtually all of Earth’s landmasses have been claimed by existing nations. To work around this, Cryptopia is a city-state built entirely on the blockchain. Being located in the blockchain gives several benefits, one key benefit is that no single entity controls or owns the blockchain making it under no nation’s jurisdiction. Therefore, the blockchain acts like international waters, and it is only fitting that Cryptopia was founded as a seasteading (permanent sea-dwelling) society. This allows citizens to claim territory in its potentially limitless frontier.<h3 id="strong-what-is-cryptopian-society-like-strong">What is Cryptopian Society like?</h3>Decentralization is one of the founding principles of Cryptopia. It is the first blockchain-based game that operates a completely distributed ledger. The founders of Cryptopia envision an ‘autonomous cryptocurrency utopia’, where blockchain technology is used to improve everyday life for its residents.Blockchain is the technological foundation of Cryptopia. It is used in everything from commerce, governance, identification, and even resource management and sustainability efforts. Tokenized assets also help in promoting a culture of accountability and efficiency from the community (and faction) level, down to each individual citizen.<h3 id="strong-why-people-are-seasteading-in-cryptopia-strong">Why People are Seasteading in Cryptopia</h3>Cryptopia&#39;s dream can only be realized through hard work and persevering its uncertainty. Nolan, Clark, Brown and Smith, are fictional founders of Cryptopia’s factions (more on them later)—but seasteading is a proposed real-world initiative.Since the 1800s, seasteading has been a novelty in science fiction. Half of the world’s surface is covered by water that is not under the control of any nation-state, making seasteading a fascinating idea. However, few projects have since tested its viability with limited success—many of these failed for environmental, regulatory, or economic reasons.The real-world founders of Cryptopia—Frank Bonnet and Hansco Leek—decided not to wait for the limiting beliefs of investors or legislation to change, and created a prototype seasteading city-state on the blockchain.Since the blockchain is borderless, it is the perfect testing ground for the concept of a sovereign seasteading society. The blockchain also allows anyone within existing countries’ borders to participate in discovering the true potential of Cryptopia—and how NFT utility can be deployed in society at large.<h3 id="strong-a-united-cryptopia-strong">A United Cryptopia</h3>People from every creed and color have ventured into Cryptopia with hope of starting a new life in this promising metaverse. This is a society with robust industries, constructive traditions, driven by technology, in a pristine environment. Whatever challenges would-be Cryptopians face in the real-world, the blockchain allows them to face these efficiently with the help of blockchain tech. Until this promise is threatened by trouble in paradise—caused by rising faction leaders with different priorities and visions for a “crypto utopia”.<h3 id="strong-leaders-of-the-new-world-strong">Leaders of the New World</h3>Peter Nolan—leader of the Industrial faction—hopes to maximize profits across the board.John Smith, the Eco faction leader, wishes to preserve Cryptopia World’s nature.Jane Brown and the Traditional faction, wish ‘absolute freedom’ to be attainable by all.While Sam Clark wants to build the Tech faction’s scientific utopia.These men and women want radically different versions for Cryptopia. This is the dilemma for the leaders of each faction. At first, they were able to work within their designated duties, but trouble brewed ahead.<h3 id="strong-the-factions-in-action-strong">The Factions in Action</h3>The Industrial faction invested their funds, the Tech faction designed the digital infrastructure, the Traditional faction recruited and educated the workers, and the Eco faction made Cryptopia city livable. But sooner or later the different views were bound to skew their relationships and the ability to cooperate.Nolan could not compromise his desire for ever-increasing profits for the Eco faction’s preservation of the planet. Brown would not allow human rights to be infringed by the Tech faction’s social and genetic engineering programs.On the other hand, Smith and Clark fear that the Industrial and Traditional factions are trying to bring flawed ways of thinking from the Old World institutions. Despite all efforts to compromise, the damage has been done. The only alternative is to tolerate coexistence in the newly founded city-state.Cryptopians are now forced to choose sides in an upheaval with no end in sight.Meanwhile, the open seas prove as expansive as it is dangerous, as Cryptopia society experienced fragmentation. The divide runs deeper with the emergence of pirates. The pirates are mobs that settled in what is known as Treasure Island, with their separate form of government and their own factions.
