</blockquote>Cryptopia fascinates me not only because it is a metaverse game and city-state built entirely on the blockchain, but also because it is an excellent example of science fiction, which I have loved since childhood.The lore of Cryptopia is a testament to this. Cryptopian society is based on a fictional lost white paper that appeared after the famous one published by <a href="https://robbreport.com/lifestyle/finance/bitcoin-founder-satoshi-nakamoto-1234613022/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Satoshi Nakamoto</a>, the real-world pseudonymous person (or persons) who invented bitcoin and so implemented the first blockchain.The first white paper, of course, is the real-world one that Nakamoto published about bitcoin, called "<a href="https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System</a>". On Oct. 31, 2008, Nakamoto posted a link to this paper to a cryptography mailing list. Nakamoto then released bitcoin software as open-source code on Jan. 3, 2009, and created the bitcoin network on Jan. 9, 2009 by mining the starting block of the chain, which is known as the genesis block. In 2010, Nakamoto handed over the network alert key and control of the code depository to American software developer Gavin Andresen, who became the lead developer at the <a href="https://www.bitcoinfoundation.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Bitcoin Foundation</a>.He or she or they then disappeared. To this day, no one knows the real identity of Satoshi Nakamoto.The mysterious <a href="https://github.com/cryptopia-com/whitepaper-legacy/blob/main/Cryptopia_Legacy__White_Paper.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">second white paper</a> by Satoshi himself, however, is a fictional one that serves as the genesis block, so to speak, of the world of Cryptopia."A few years after Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin white paper changed the world, another white paper of mysterious origin created a stir. Satoshi’s work states that the world is due for economic collapse due to its reliance on fiat currency. It would take only one crisis, such as climate change, to unleash an unmitigated global catastrophe. His startling proposal: Cryptopia World, a nation based on the blockchain, a new society would serve as an example for all others to follow."One of my favorite works of science fiction is the late <a href="https://theconversation.com/foundation-an-introduction-to-five-major-themes-in-the-work-of-science-fiction-writer-isaac-asimov-168608" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">Isaac Asimov’s</a> Foundation series, which has been loosely adapted as a <a href="https://tv.apple.com/show/umc.cmc.5983fipzqbicvrve6jdfep4x3" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">streaming TV series</a> whose first season premiered on AppleTV+ on Sept. 24, 2021.Considered as one of the greatest science fiction authors – in fact, <a href="https://nationaltoday.com/national-science-fiction-day/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">National Science Fiction Day</a> is celebrated every Jan. 2, which is Asimov’s listed birthdate – Asimov was inspired by Edward Gibbon’s “History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” when he created the award-winning Foundation series.In the Foundation series, the brilliant mathematician Hari Seldon has developed a new science called psychohistory. Psychohistory combines history, sociology, and mathematics to predict the future behavior of large groups of people. Through it, Seldon foresees that the Galactic Empire, which is seemingly at the height of its power, is destined to fall, ushering in a Dark Age that will last for 30,000 years before another galactic empire arises.While realizing that it is too late to prevent the fall of the Galactic Empire, Seldon devises a plan that will reduce the interregnum between the First and Second Galactic Empire to a mere 1,000 years.This is the fascinating premise that propels the events in the Foundation series, as for the Seldon Plan to work, people have to be kept in the dark about the actual details of the plan. Otherwise, if enough people knew about the plan, they might no longer act according to their predicted behavior and introduce deviations that would cause the plan to fail.Major turning points throughout the 1,000-year interregnum have been predicted by the Seldon Plan. Known as a Seldon Crisis, this major turning point might result in a wrong decision that will put the Seldon Plan in jeopardy, though through psychohistory Seldon is confident that more likely than not the Foundation will survive. After each Seldon Crisis, the Vault opens and a hologram of the dead mathematician appears to explain the significance of the crisis that, presumably, the Foundation has overcome.What’s fascinating is that throughout the course of the series, different individuals and groups have their own interpretations and reactions to the Seldon Plan. Some put their faith in Seldon to the point of religious fanaticism, and think they can always rely on the Seldon Plan to save the Foundation whether or not they act. Some are skeptical of the Seldon Plan, believing that it can no longer predict the future. Others, who are would-be conquerors, look at the Seldon Plan as a challenge, pitting their “living will” against a “dead hand”.Similarly, in Cryptopia, the white paper becomes subject to different interpretations. The vision for Cryptopia as laid out in the white paper is twofold:<ul><li>Demonstrate that a society founded on blockchain technology is sustainable.</li><li>Provide a haven for humanity that will preserve the fabric of society, then facilitate a resurgence of growth.</li></ul>After the semi-autonomous city-state of Cryptopia is constructed on international waters through seasteading, however, it gives rise to four Factions, each with a different interpretation of the white paper and how their society should be run.These four Factions are Eco, Tech, Industrial, and Traditional, which are led by John Smith, Sam Clark, Peter Nolan, and Jane Brown, respectively.As the names of these Factions make clear, each is devoted to a different ethos. Eco prioritizes sustainability and so does not believe in sacrificing the environment for the sake of progress. Tech emphasizes the use of technological innovations to build the perfect society. Industrial is committed to economic growth and creating more wealth for members of society. Meanwhile, Traditional believes in consensus, striking the right balance, and creating equal opportunities for everyone.These Factions add more nuance to the game, as players can choose based on whether it aligns with their real-world values, or whether it gives them a gameplay advantage. It also makes Cryptopia a great place of learning, as it offers content not just about the game, but also real-world issues that are important to each Faction. For instance, climate change in the case of Eco.And just like much of science fiction eventually has turned into science fact, Cryptopia the metaverse game itself is serving as a model for the decentralized future of our real world. It is, in a way, proof of concept that it’s possible to create a society based on the blockchain.As Cryptopia Founder and Lead Developer Frank Bonnet puts it, Cryptopia was designed to become an eternal game. Once it’s launched, the game will be turned over completely to the players, as part of Cryptopia’s commitment to decentralization. And because Cryptopia is built entirely on the blockchain, no one – not even the creators – can pull the plug on this web3 game.“We can potentially update the game because the smart contracts are upgradable. If we need more significant changes than the upgradable patterns allow, we can change to different smart contracts. Eventually, the players and stakeholders accept or reject changes. This goes for adding new maps as well.“The game client is a different story. We can update the game client as much as we like. You could say that the client is an interpretation of what happens in the blockchain.
