The perfect time to look back on the history of TEKKON is now. Whole Earth Foundation (WEF), a non-profit organization responsible for this community service-based position information game which allows members of the public help with infrastructure maintenance by taking, posting, and reviewing photos of manhole covers has come a long way. With more than 1.23 Million manhole data from all over the world, TEKKON marks its first anniversary after going through adjustments and modifications to hit it big.In 2021, the web version of Guardians of Metal and Concrete, TEKKON’s predecessor was released. It was followed by the iOS version’s release on March 2022, with the Android version not far behind on April. The participation of many citizens in the Manhole Crusade signaled wider acceptance. The evolved version of the app TEKKON was born on July 2022.Testing in closed beta followed before its limited release on September 2022. It finally opened to the public on October 17, 2022.To commemorate the first anniversary of the beginnings of TEKKON, let us look into the highlights of citizen cooperation through this game:<img src="https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/1*PB9XCZiSFSxEX702sImJiQ.png" />Data on more than 1,230,000 manholes was collected through daily ironwork by citizens.That number has now grown to an average of over 10,000 manholes posted to the app per day.In addition to posting manholes, the review function for judging the state of deterioration is gaining momentum day by day, withthe number of responses exceeding 7.54 million. There are about 200,000 reviews per day. This is largely due to the steady efforts of citizens who are participating in the city’s infrastructure maintenance.<img src="https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/1*LS4W8JMeEc7mrPerTmF89Q.png" />The movement of #tetsukatsu, which preserves infrastructure with TEKKON, started in Japan and is spreading all over the world.With the limited public release of TEKKON, infrastructure not only in Japan but all over the world was targeted. We currently have 7 countries: Japan, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Brazil, and South Korea joining the fun and community service. Even now, introduction to new countries continues and the number of citizens who protect infrastructure all over the world is steadily increasing in number.<img src="https://miro.medium.com/max/1400/1*fD_hxvX7p0KrsSVkxZ7Q_w.png" />While playing TEKKON, a new community is formed where people learn about each other’s culture through infrastructure photography even without the use of language. Across national borders, public interest in infrastructure maintenance is increasing, and a new social activity called tetsukatsu is being born all over the world.From October 2022, utility poles will be an another subject of infrastructure collaboration in addition to manholes. Manholes are not the only infrastructure that must be protected.
