<h2 id="header-0">Researchers claim that organisations supporting Russia's war in Ukraine have been aggressively collecting cryptocurrencies to finance paramilitary operations and escape sanctions.</h2>

According to reports, pro-Russian organisations have raised a sizeable sum of bitcoin to evade U.S.-led sanctions and fund Russia's military operations in Ukraine. The sum had reportedly reached $400,000 as of September 22 according to a study done by the digital asset compliance and risk management company TRM Labs, CNBC reported on Monday.
The analysis revealed that these groups were using the well-known encrypted messaging service Telegram to provide donors with ways to contribute money, which was then used to fund supplies for militia groups with ties to Russia and places close to the Ukrainian border.
The U.S. Treasury has designated one of these, Task Force Rusich, as a neo-Nazi paramilitary organisation that has engaged in battle with Russia's forces in Ukraine. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the department has imposed sanctions on it. On a Telegram channel, it was attempting to solicit money for things like radios and thermal imaging equipment.
The Novorossiya Aid Coordinating Center, another TRM Labs-identified entity, gathered roughly $21,000 in cryptocurrencies, primarily <a href="https://www.coingabbar.com/en/crypto-currency/bitcoin-btc-prices-usd" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow">bitcoin (BTC)</a>, with the intention of purchasing drones, according to the study. To aid Russian actions in Ukraine, the group was founded in 2014.
The findings come as sanctions against Russia for choosing to invade Ukraine in late February continue to increase, significantly restricting its ability to access the world financial system. In order to get around the restrictions, the Russian government is currently attempting to legitimise crypto payments for cross-border transactions.
Large-Scale Russian Transactions in Crypto Said to Be Lacking in Liquidity
Although experts have noted that the crypto space may not have the liquidity Russia would require to transfer significant sums of money, it does have enough to for paramilitary organisations to conduct transactions for the equipment they need to obtain.
TRM Labs analysed publicly accessible wallet addresses and cross-checked other websites and online behaviour to identify the groupings. Redbord noted that it was difficult to say for sure whether they were collaborating with the Russian government.
I find it intriguing that in these situations, cryptocurrency is only a means of payment. It is a method of moving money. The CEO continued, "And there are examples of it being used for good and examples of it being used for harm in this environment." Both the government and volunteer organisations in Ukraine have been funding their defensive and humanitarian initiatives with cryptocurrency donations.
The most recent study on the subject comes after a report by blockchain analytics company Chainalysis earlier this year that revealed 54 pro-Russian groups had received over $2.2 million in various cryptocurrencies. The majority of the cryptocurrency payments were given to a few of these groups, but the remaining ones also received sizeable sums, according to the business.
