The European Union (EU) has announced that it is developing a strategy that will employ blockchain technology and non-fungible tokens to prevent the counterfeiting of real-world products.
The European Union’s Intellectual Property Office will be in charge of developing the proposed system. The strategy is the conclusion of over five years of hard work.
The group indicates in a document released at the beginning of September that they have already settled on a high-level architecture for this project. The document also describes the broad strokes of the system’s operation.
The owners of intellectual property (IP) will issue digital tokens (twin NFTs) to establish the authenticity of a set of manufactured commodities.
To build these commodities on the tracking blockchain, the owners of these IP rights will first need to be added as authorized signatories.
System to trace supply chain
The system will therefore allow the owners of intellectual property to be certain that the products offered in stores are real. This should be accomplished by tracking the supply chain as the items travel through the different checkpoints.
The European Union Intellectual Property Office hopes to establish a functioning system by the end of 2023. However, in order to achieve this aim, the EUIPO will need to create a registration system that will bring together all of the EU’s IP holders, logistical operations, and retailers. According to the study, in order to achieve the goal, the EU would strive to be compatible with existing supply chain monitoring systems.
If the EU is successful in implementing this system before 2023, it will be one of the first large-scale deployments of blockchain technology for the purpose of achieving the goal. However, blockchain technology has already been used to monitor supply chains in the past.
Furthermore, the European Union is now discussing MiCA, a proposed law that would oversee cryptocurrencies on a union-wide basis.
VeChain cryptocurrency used for supply chain management
Recently, VeChain (VET), an enterprise blockchain project, announced a partnership with Orionone, a global supply chain technology solution. The aim of this partnership is to incorporate blockchain technology into Vechain’s existing technological stack.
Meanwhile, electric component manufacturer Schneider Electric selected supply chain management-focused blockchain platform VeChain as an ecosystem partner last year.
As previously reported by CoinGabbar, numerous governments are embracing blockchain and Web3 technologies to improve their security and work administration. Lastly, what are your thoughts on the EU’s move to utilize blockchain technology and NFTs to prevent the counterfeiting of real-world products?
